Consequences for Veterans and/or retirees in the 2021 DC Riots

Did this probably 8 to 10 years ago. Highly recommend it. I pull up Fox News or CNN every now and then just to see what they're talking about, but I don't watch it routinely like I used to. Same with talk radio.

    That is a perfect description.

    From undesignated to officer

Frenchiee...welcome. What is it specifically you want to put in a package for? Have you read the Navy instruction for what you're trying (want) to do? That should be your first step. If you don't know what I'm talking about or where to start, I recommend that you go talk to your command career...

    Drones - sUAS Thread

Circa 2006, I'm on a nice long afternoon run around the perimeter of the Navy base in Newport, RI. One lonely goose was near the path as I passed it. It skirted away as they normally did...at least that's what I thought. This time though, the little bastard waited for me to pass and then took to...

I thought you may have been talking about nukes, but wasn't sure.
  8. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

Divos, DHs, and XOs are not commanders. And institutionally speaking, even a great CO at the unit (ship) level isn't going to have much impact on the larger Navy organization. Also, your question assumes we were good ship handlers at some point in the past. Were we? When? To your initial...

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

I did my second tour on the Lincoln (circa 2003). There were definitely a lot more folks than that who weren't on the watch bill.
  10. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

The proper terminology is SWOS in a Box
  11. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

Nuke world vs. SWO world. What you're talking about here doesn't exist in the SWO world, at least not to the extent that you are referring to. Naval Reactors has a lot to do with this.

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

Lookouts or no lookouts, the OOD (and JOOD/OOD(U/I) and conning officer) should be doing that anyway, preferably every 15 minutes, but definitely not less than once every 30 minutes. This shit isn't rocket science.
  13. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

"Commanders" is a fairly broad term here. Who are you referring to specifically? COs, ISICs, CNSF?
  14. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

As a former XO of a NOSC, I can safely say that we never harassed the SELRES, the dirty slimy little cockroaches that they are. Our job was simply to ensure they were ready to rapidly deploy to all regions of the world in the larger effort to provide contributory peacetime support when/where needed.
  15. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

No. We've known that for a while. We just haven't done anything about it because we were able to get away with it for so long.
  16. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

Highest level of accountability short of criminal charges, yes. But I think it sets a very dangerous precedent to go beyond that.

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

  18. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

Well, she definitely missed the ships I was on.
  19. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

I've long been a proponent of "everybody stands watch" except CO, XO, CMC. I really don't give a shit that a senior chief with 22 years in thinks he's above standing watch. This is obviously geared at CRUDES, but but CVN/AMPHIB community could do something similar.
  20. Steve Wilkins

    USS Fitzgerald collision in C7F

I said those same words once. To your larger point though, I don't get it either. I never have. It's really nothing more than managing relative motion in a 2D space.

Unfit or unqualified? Be careful with your words.

    How competitive am I

Just a heads up here, but calling someone Shipmate has a completely different meaning than saying something like, "We were shipmates..."
  23. Steve Wilkins

    Shortest time at sea?

^ Yeah, what he said. I'll go so far as to say you probably shouldn't join the military if you don't want to deploy (multiple times).
  24. Steve Wilkins

    Navy Surface Warfare Officer?

It is. But I actually think this article downplays a lot of the challenges.
  25. Steve Wilkins

Is being a SWO really that bad?

This is a relative question. What stories have you heard that sound "torturous"?
  26. Steve Wilkins

    What does this mean?

I sense a disturbance in the Force. This is quite a clever way of rewording the tired old question, "What percent get jets?"

A voice of reason. Never ever fucking enlist if you can be an officer. It's just plain old good common sense.

Whomever (s)he is...I wanna put in for a NAM

Soooo....the pilot didn't do anything illegal, break any rules, or put anyone in danger, but his actions were as you say, a result of poor headwork. Really?? You sound like a SWO.

Whomever (s)he is...I wanna put in for a NAM

My favorite part: “What happened this afternoon terrified me and my children. They were in their classrooms at BHS and Longfellow the the plane screamed over their heads. In my younger child’s class, children began screaming out of fear. Simultaneously, I was at home thinking, ‘So this is what...

    Why are you Leaving?

That's a pretty simplistic and very narrow view of an aircraft carrier. There's a bit more to it than that.
  35. Steve Wilkins

Well hell, since we're playing with statistics now, neither is getting commissioned.

Officer Dynamics in a Flying Squadron

On the SWO side, we had no issues with officers doing their own thing. E-6 and below had their fun together and chiefs for the most part stayed in their own box too. No hurt feelings for anyone. Hail and farewells were all officer only except while I was in college, and even then it was only...

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

It is possible to do both a masters on your post JO shore tour and then NWC later on as an O-4 or O-5.
  41. Steve Wilkins

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

I'm assuming you're just speaking about post JO tours for sub guys, yes? Because what you said is not applicable for SWO's in the sense that there is only that particular billet that is career enhancing.

    Female applicants and haircuts

Men think women should be just like men? That doesn't even make any sense. Why on earth would we want women to be just like us? And the women I've seen that have wanted to be just like men don't look or act like women. But I digress.

New Intel O-1: Carrier "ships company" VS. "squadron"

Yeah, kind of like when shoes and aviators found out they were going to do a tour in the sandbox in addition to (read: not in lieu of) their sea tours. Well, ok...maybe not quite the same thing.

    Seasick Swo

Yeah, I bet it was. My stateroom on ABE was on the 2nd deck, port side, pretty much right below the start of cats 3 and 4. I got it on launch and recovery. God that sucked. Worst sleep of my life plus my rack had a slight bend to it. My back hurt for months after we returned back from that 10...

    Seasick Swo

Man, I never slept so good as I did on the CG. Went through some pretty heavy seas and loved it, both on the bridge and in my rack. I spent A LOT of time in the RHIB for various reasons and never had a problem with that either. Those were some good times. Now, I just sit here and peck away at my...

Besides, you can learn how to do anything on YouTube. Give it a try. You are so missing the point of all this. Getting your hair cut...
