    FY14 STA-21 Applicants

For all of you close to finishing your degree, I believe you can apply for a commissioning program BEFORE you finish. I had a prior apply to be a rad health physics officer before he was finished with his degree. I also know for a fact college students can apply for OCS before they finish...

    FY14 STA-21 Applicants

This is severely misguided. The average enlisted sailor including myself (FY 08 selectee) works on getting a degree that he normally wouldn't choose from a university that is not top tier because it is easier to work around his work schedule and they accept a lot of SMART transcript credits. You...

    Computing NSS Quesstimate

There is a lot of truth to this. I was one of the first few studs in a VT squadron to complete the T-6 syllabus and a friend who finished from the same squadron a year later finished with the same multiple (1.17 or .18 I think) and his NSS was 10 points higher than mine.

The aviator forums are slow so I stopped by to see the annual STA wait. I wanted to end this thought. The way it was explained to me is that each community (pilot, nfo, cec, nuke, swo, etc) have to authorize the money to fully fund the STA program. With the current budget situation and the fact...

    Corpus T-6 transition

It was a rumor started by students just finishing primary. I put it on here to see if it had any legs. With all the primary instructors on here it was the best spot to ask what studs are asking for. I could have started a new post, but why?

Rumor at VP-30 is that it is almost impossible to get a maritime slot right now because everyone is putting it first on their dream sheet in hopes of getting the P-8A.

Remember every sailor has ODU in their back pocket if they need to get accepted to a school. I have never heard of them turning down a service member including some with sub 2.00 GPAs from previous college.

I just finished the multi engine maritime syllabus and we are still doing all of the things mentioned. In fact one review stage flight was needles only, which means no CDI. Just repelling head and pulling tail.

    FY13 STA-21 Applicants

The easiest way to get a hold of an OC at a particular unit is email the NROTC unit and request information about the unit. Generally, they will get you in touch with an OC to answer all of your questions. Your NROTC will be the ultimate duty station on your NSI orders so you'll know when you...

    FY13 STA-21 Applicants

    1. Absolutely. . . I ended up attending a University that wasn't even on the top 5 I provided STA-21. The same goes for degrees. You can put your desired major to be anything, but that has no bearing on what you have to study. 2. I don't think there is necessarily as much time as you would...

    FY13 STA-21 Applicants

You get an enlisted eval every year just as you would in the fleet. Even as an OC you are still an E-6, E-5, etc. When you go to a base in civies the gate guys will only know you are enlisted. No where on your ID will there being anything about being an officer candidate. One of the benefits...

I don't know if it changed or not, but when I was going through the process U of Texas was not an option. At that time they only reviewed applications in March or April and wouldn't give any exceptions to anyone including military. They made it impossible to meet the deadlines STA-21 sets...

Thing I wish I would have thought of a little more: Degree: I chose to get a technical degree while only having 7 semesters to finish it in. I would caution you on getting so defensive and calling out higher ranking guys who whether you believe it or not are trying to help. FY13 STA-21 Applicants

My two cents on recent/past selectees: The process to go from selectee-OC-ENS does a pretty good job of weeding out the marginal guys whether they get kicked out for military related items or hang themselves with long leash of personal freedoms they get while in STA. I know of at least 5 guys...

I think it is good thing you seek out the help of prior selectees, but honestly I don't think one can help much. We were going through the same anxiety as all of you during the countdown to selection. Nobody will tell you they new they had a STA spot in the bag in August. In fact, I think a...

    FY13 STA-21 Applicants

If you took what I said as a lecture, lighten up. I think until 75 becomes the norm for STA-21 selections I would treat last year as an enigma. Traditionally swo, pilot, and nfo also have decent selection percentages in STA. Last year, they weren't re-designating any aviation NPQs, DORs, or...

New Recruit - just started looking for what to prepare for STA21

+1 on the money comment. I couldn't even get them to award credit for a basic chemistry course and I was an ELT. Honestly that is a good thing because the navy only teaches you bits and pieces from various courses to get their point across.

New Recruit - just started looking for what to prepare for STA21

Although this may actually be true, for every ODU, there are several schools where nuke credits won't count for physics, calculus, chemistry, or any other technical course. My college (University of Illinois at Chicago) only took credits from actual colleges and that was common among my friends.

New Recruit - just started looking for what to prepare for STA21

The best advice I can give him is to apply for the nuke option of STA-21. First off, it accounted for half of the selectees last year. Secondly, he can only apply for that option while at a training command like NPTU. He can probably forget about nuke school credits transferring.

    Officer Candidate Uniform Questions

My command allowed the OCs to choose what we wanted to do. We did exactly what Wlawr said. We pinned OC rank on the collar and cover. Something else that is interesting: If you are like Wlawr and I and got wash khakis the Navy actually gives you $600 dollars upon commissioning to get the...

    IRR it is !!!

I certainly don't know how common this will be, but one of the MIDN at my unit graduating in December just had his hardship waiver approved. Good luck to the rest of you. He had his waiver approved in around two weeks so the rest of you should be hearing something soon.

We had a MIDN who was notified literally 12 hours before commissioning that he failed his physical. The offered him a sub nuke slot which allowed him to commission the next day. He took and was on hold for a few months waiting for his interview.

    NROTC Service Selection FY11

I agree with you all on SA. They can only spare 2 pilot spots for STA-21 Core guys, but a kid at my unit go selected SNA with a 2.40 gpa, prt failures, and a 4/5/4 ASTB.

Wlawr005- I agree there are parts of the army that are worse than the Navy QOL. That being said you have no idea about the nuclear community. Even on a shore duty guys have 7 day & 10 hours/day work weeks of rotating shift work. There is a reason the nuke officer attrition rate is well over...

How is everybody preparing physically for NSI?

Who ever says crossfit does more harm than good is an IDIOT. The only time an exercise will hurt you is if you do it incorrectly. Crossfit mentions this a million times and provides alternative exercises until you get more fit. PT is the only thing in the military that doesn't take rocket...
