The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

I got lucky and talked the RAG PR's into getting me an old mask. Fits much better than the new combat edge did. Guarded that thing with my life until I got my JHMCS cut. I hear that more or less locks you into one mask type

How were your experiences in the centrifuge?

Fixed it for ya, bro. Yeah, the centrifuge sucks, because the G's seem worse than the aircraft, and because if your head isn't perfectly stationary you get this terrible tumbling sensation that makes you sick to your stomach...which is exactly how you want to feel pulling G's.... I still think...

    "Quirks" of Past Aircraft

Cat, I've heard that the F-4 was very stable and well-behaved around the boat, just had a fast approach speed, whereas the Turkey was something of a handful. Would you agree? What made the F-14 so difficult to land? Also, a lot of Phantom vids I've seen have them rocketing off the bow with...

    "Quirks" of Past Aircraft

Nittany, I assume DFCS is Digital Flight Control System? Is the modern Prowler a fly-by-wire airplane, or does it simply have "control aug" ala T-45? That does sound like a bitch to fly...was it a good handling jet in the other realms of flight, or can you tell it's simply a bastardized A-6...

    "Quirks" of Past Aircraft

No AOA indexer in a carrier jet?! I guess I took for granted the fact that the Navy has been flying AOA approaches as long as we had jets, and had written the "cut to land" off as a prop thing...I guess now though it's a straight-deck CV thing, and jets flew from straight deck boats. I guess...

    "Quirks" of Past Aircraft

In the past, something I always enjoyed hearing about at the "O-Club" were the certain traits or characteristics that were unique to each of the varied types that the Navy used to operate. Unfortunately, in today's all Hornet airwing, there are fewer unique types. Just figured I'd drop the...

    T-6 Texan ii measurements

6'2" (Unless we're doing BCA, then 6'3") and 205lbs here. Fit in the T-6 just fine. I like to sit low, so I put the pedals all the way out, no problems, and was comfortable even on a cross country. Goshawk was a bit tighter, but doable, just not comfortable for more than about a 1.5, which...

Some of NASA's jets have wx radar and updated avionics along with new Martin Baker seats and different engine start setup than AF jets. They've also got different intakes for better t/o performance. Looks like that jet has the radar nose.

Another new set of Hookers inbound

Both wings brought jets, but it was briefed that studs could expect to fly a jet from either TraWing. I think it mostly worked out so Meridian studs were flying "A" jets, and Kingsville "B" jets though.

This whole "On Speed" thing....how does it work?

Okay, then given enough time, the On-Speed trim would slow the jet back to on speed once it stabilized into the wind, correct? So are we just helping it get there faster with a slower trim setting in the groove?

  25. Wingnut172N

This whole "On Speed" thing....how does it work?

The jet is moving relative to the air mass though, so while wind affects your ground speed, the airplane should fly into the wind the same as it does away from the wind, no? Sort of like that airplane on a treadmill thing...

This whole "On Speed" thing....how does it work?

I kept asking because you didn't answer the question I asked (or was trying to ask)...the question was why are there two different trim settings for the same AOA, one on downwind and one in the groove? The approach turn doesn't really come into play. This is more of an Aero E Nerd question...

    T-6 vs T-34

Don't sweat it because you won't have a choice either way. Best case you'll be asked what you want, then given what's available. Whatever happens, you'll love the airplane that you fly. You'll either become a T-34 guy bragging about being "Last of the T-34 studs" or a T-6 guy pretending to...

Question about the changes in Naval aviation over the last 20 years.

The other thing is that technology has changed the attack/strike role significantly. Whereas in Korea/Vietnam it required 100+ bombs and an Alpha Strike to knock out a bridge, a F/A-18 can do the same with a single JDAM. No reason to send an A-6 screaming into a target with 30+ Mk82's anymore...

This whole "On Speed" thing....how does it work?

Kmac...that's more what I was looking for, and it that makes sense, now that you mention it. I would assume then that such a change would be much larger in something like a T-2 where the thrust line is farther from the axis of the CG? Could anybody confirm that?
  31. Wingnut172N

This whole "On Speed" thing....how does it work?

RLSO, at the risk of sounding like an academic nerd....if I don't trim into the approach turn though, shouldn't I come out on speed again when I roll out? I understand I have to accelerate in the turn, then decel during my wings level transition, but shouldn't the jet seek on speed again on...

This whole "On Speed" thing....how does it work?

Alright, I've never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer, but this has me somewhat confused... VT Checkrides for Biennial Flight Review?

Well, the local FSDO didn't think that VT checkrides counted for a Biennial, since they weren't a qualification ride for a NATOPS qual, or Instrument Qual, etc...that being said, the Biennial was pretty simple to knock out.

VT Checkrides for Biennial Flight Review?

The FAR's say a "controllable pitch propeller" and you are controlling the pitch of the T-6 prop via the PCL. It doesn't say anywhere that it needs to be controlled via a condition lever, or prop lever.

Professional Cop vs. Guy with open carry mp5 (.22 replica)

There are situations (hunting/hiking/backpacking etc...) where I would probably be more likely to open carry than conceal. My sole point was that I think it's a better idea to carry concealed in public from a tactical perspective (I don't know how to say that without sounding like a mall...

Professional Cop vs. Guy with open carry mp5 (.22 replica)

From a tactical perspective it seems that you're opening yourself up to being the second person shot, after the uniformed police officer. I'd think that concealing your weapon would give quite an advantage in the case you need to use it.

VT Checkrides for Biennial Flight Review?

I am looking into getting a GA checkout and flying places during the weekends. In talking with the CFI at the local FBO, he said that military checkrides could be used in place of a BFR. In addition I can use my upchit as an FAA medical. The upchit is no problem, but I'm curious if VT...

NATOPS check vs. "Safe for Solo"...

Has anybody (Beechcraft/Pax) ever tried opening the canopy on a T-6 at idle? I know the prop can't be feathered but it doesn't seem like it'd be impossible? Uncomfortable, maybe but what is the issue? Propwash, FOD?
