The Mighty P-3 - "Subservience Plane"

Don't turn your nose up at what we used to call the PDC (Practice Depth Charge). We had a P2 crew mark on top and signal an attack with 2 separate PDC releases at which time the target sub was supposed to "give up" and surface. When he didn't the AO in the afterstation tied 4 PDC's together (on...

    A Pilots son flying solo

My hardest day was the day after my son's first birthday. I walked to the hanger with tears in my eyes, leaving on a 6 month deployment. Fortunately, I had married a rock star Mom. She held things together then and still does, 35 years later. The balance can be achieved but having two committed...

    Blue Angels Aviators Tours Extended

There are still planes to maintain, phase inspections, etc. I suspect the ground guys will stay somewhat busy, with the additional bonus of living close to the beach and more time off for golf, family, or other hobbies. Not what they signed up to do but not as bad as the loss of hours the pilots...

They did things a little differently in the way-back when. My Dad went from CQ in an SNJ directly to F8F Bearcats at Cabaniss Field for advanced and then to JTU-1 flying ex AF F80's for jet transition at Whiting. I have some pictures around here somewhere from those days. He lost his logbooks...

Heh. When I soloed there in '67 it was shorter, narrower, and gravel. Also had high wires on the approach end of Rwy 7.

    Whidbey Island

Not really. Wind was gusting around 20 IIRC, it was in a Piper Colt with a very low Vs, and was a total power loss scenario. We touched on the edge of the concrete and were airborne before reaching the other side. Had it been an actual power loss it would have been a lot safer in those...

Is the OLF still used? Google Maps shows big yellow X's on the runway. On my private checkride Wes Lupien pulled power right over the OLF. When I started to set up for a crosswind emergency landing he says "No, no. Land ACROSS the wide concrete and into the grass, into the wind." And proceeded...

Yes, I did a major cleanup (CCleaner) and reboot this morning and just now got around to checking things. It's working now. You'd think a guy who usta make a living on these things would be a little quicker on the draw, huh?

Feinstein to introduce AWB in January

Feinstein to introduce AWB in January

I (used to) reload because of being able to tailor a round to a specific gun. Two brand new guns will each "like" slightly different loads and part of the fun is figuring out what load each gun "likes". I have several long guns in my safe that print sub-MOA out at 200 yds or better, but not...

Spent a lot of time out on Smith Shoals fishing for grouper. Not sure where any restricted areas are now. Catch a few grunt on the way out for bait and life is good. Sure wish I had had GPS back then, could'a found my honey holes a lot faster.

    Service member being an idiot

We had them at NATTC Millington back in the day. We called them "Bush Chiefs" because they would actually hide in the bushes trying to catch sailors goofing off between the barracks and classrooms.

    Booze, it's what's for dinner...

I read somewhere that the pricing on the "Two Buck Chuck" was that instead of using the more expensive wooden storage casks for ageing they used stainless steel containers with little to no degredation in taste. We bought 2 cases last time in Monterey and it was palatable. Not a Silver Oak...

    Service member being an idiot

There is rarely, if ever, an occasion for a Chief to publicly "Correct" even the lowliest Ensign. However, a private, friendly reminder out of view of the sailors will sometimes suffice. If said Ensign is not open to that, his actions will eventually come back to bite him in the ass. As for...
