    Tattoos of Wings

Yeah, he is former Army helo driver. Haven't seen him since to tell him I saw his tat online on a forum...because that would sound weird as hell. Unknown if he has any DaVinci-inspired tats, besides the ANA one. I'll ask, Flash.

Small world-turns out I work with this gent on a couple of projects, as I saw him in the gym sans shirt.

A day in the life as a CG Aviator?

Yes. The Coast Guard is getting C-27Js (got the first one at the end of last year), and stood up a unit last June to begin receiving the planes and coordinate training, aircraft configuration, qualifications, and manuals.

A day in the life as a CG Aviator?

I've known quite a few DCAs who made the switch, but it was dependent on the needs of the fixed-wing community. There might be a fixed wing transition board (though I haven't seen anything on the message board) with the C-27Js coming on line.

    Coast Guard DCA

I haven't been on a board, but your experience straddling the two communities puts you in a great spot, depending on the needs of the service. I think your hours and experience look solid-I'd put a package in as soon as you can, and roll the dice.

CDR Hugh "BusyBee604" Magee, Welcome Back Sir!

Sorry to hear you were on the Binnacle List - hope you have a quick recovery and are back to posting soon. Get off any pain meds and switch to expensive Scotch as soon as you can.

    Tattoos of Wings

I wasn't talking about visible tattoos; nor was the OP - I was just talking about tattoos in general. I've seen senior government executive types (two SES's, in fact) at the gym with tattoos on their biceps, thighs, and back of the shoulder. My first tour of HQ from '90 to '94 I saw none of...

    Tattoos of Wings

Tattoos are a pretty generational thing. I didn't see a tattoo on an officer until 1996 - the previous 8 years in the service I had only seen two officers with tattoos and they both came from the enlisted ranks. After that, the number of Academy grads with tattoos slowly increased, as tattoos...

For the record: I think longer hair looks ok on the military's female leadership.

    Female applicants and haircuts

Lessee - we've touched on: the lack of equality in standards between the sexes in today's military, Religion, Separation of Church and State, the mention of God in a Code of Conduct, and still had time for a pissing contest between two members. *sniff* This thread reminds me of the olden days on...

Tortugas MOA, west of Key West

Yeah, it's the best when a couple of guys in Hatteras boats doing some weekend fishing are shootin' the shit while I'm trying to talk to a vessel in distress. Sometimes they will try to speak in short sentences, because then no one will notice we're on a distress frequency. So sneaky.

Having a child during flight school

My daughter was born in my last week of API - it makes things suck in that your significant other has to pick up a lot of slack, and there will be lots of sleepless nights, but you'll get through it. I wouldn't want the geo-bachelor thang...I could only spend an hour a day really involved with...

Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps claims pay cuts would raise discipline

I agree with Flash...it isn't a cut, and you have to parse it to make it a cut, but, really, I think that is getting involved in semantics. My main concern would be that the senior leadership before Congress isn't pushing back on smaller raises. The main things I want from senior leadership...

    RIP BlkPny

What a fantastic career and life BlkPny had/led. Wrote some of the best posts on this or any other forum I frequent; always funny, self-effacing, well-written and worth a read. What a great example of a Naval Aviator.

CNN discovers the 4 fans of freedom

I've heard a minority of folks question his decision to land there - what's the conventional wisdom in the P-3 community? As for throwing an anonymous memo out where it will get scrutinized and torn apart during a campaign...that is cray cray, as my teen daughter sez.

    Advice on short-touring/going second tour

Congrats - hope you are somewhere on the East Coast you like (I'd love to be in Boston, myself...the base is a short walk to great restaurants/short stumble to great bars). Hopefully someone with more current time will chime in, but my classmates from OCS (this was 15 years ago, YMMV), who...

    Flying the C-37A?

The 6 pilots I've known that have flown the Commandant's plane(s) have all been fixed wing - four went their second flying tour and the other two went their third flying tour. It is based on luck, timing and solid performance. A pilot I knew from my Sacramento was just picked up...dunno if he...

Coast Guard buying out a ROTC senior?

I have not heard of the Coast Guard buying out a ROTC contract; it is very difficult to get into OCS right now, and guessing it would be cheaper to get a college educated guy off the street and train him for 17 weeks, vice getting you. I understand you want to fly SAR - admirable, but we DO use...

    Army "Right Sizing"

What to wear to enlistment swearing in...

If you are going into the USMC, the civilian requirement during the warmer months is jorts and a woven belt, during summer, Levi's and a woven belt, both with a collared shirt tucked in neatly.

    Disappointed in NEX

Doubt you'll succeed in that, when so many folks now want to get into cocktail culture and decorate their house in Mid-Century Modern style, because of this: (Full disclosure...never seen the show)

    Disappointed in NEX

I'm in the DC area now, living 7 mins from Ft Myer; gas is 20-30 cents cheaper than in town, booze and beer are cheaper, the commissary saves us money on staples (we skip most of the produce and meat, as others have said), and the MCX at Henderson Hall has some of the nicest stuff I've ever seen...

    C-130s

CO/XO of a cutter then flight school

I would probably vote in the "It will help, not hurt" side of things. It is only a two year tour, so you would be starting flight school at 4 years of service, vice 2. That isn't very long, and if you do well at being a skipper it will be a plus in your record AND you will have had command AND...

Hey Navy, We’re Doing This Aviation Thing All Wrong

Small UAS are coming the CG's way very soon, and was reading a brief about our need to expand the program. In the power point it said something to the affect of "The 20th Century was about manned flight; this century is the age of unmanned flight". Slow down, tiger; we are only 12.5 years...

    Current Aircraft Personnel Shortages?

I haven't heard of any rumblings of desperate need for a particular airframe; it looks pretty likely that we might (could? will?) get the C-27J aircraft, so who knows. Look for no short-term C-27J billets, as they would stand up an Asset Project Office of aviators to put together manuals, tech...

    FLASH: Confidence Shattered

Where would the prisoners go? Where would the $ come from to move and house them? What states would accept them? What other countries would accept them? FLASH: Confidence Shattered

Defining taxes going toward social programs as "wealth redistribution" is meaningless. It's simply a way to re-frame the argument "I work hard and shouldn't pay taxes". Are you saying we shouldn't have social programs? Or we shouldn't have taxes? Wait, Congress blocks closing Gitmo 6 times...

Are we talking slavery, the rights of women and minorities to vote, or some other thing that was "right for the country for generations"? ;) Plenty of "bumpkin republicans" have voted for personal interests-unless you are saying their "taxes enough already" is somehow altruistic in nature.
  39. HercDriver

The rich make more, so they carry more of a burden. If you want less of a deficit, you need more revenue...pretty simple. And the deficit has decreased under Obama as well. Defunding a war vice defunding a law that passed that a minority wants changed (not stopped), are two very different things. The time to "oppose it" has passed. Facts are that the ACA is law. It was passed by one branch, signed by another and found Constitutional by a third.
