So what the OP posted is one scenario. Then you have the scenario of getting to the fleet quickly and then getting orders to a 3 yr non flying tour i.e. OSO or Quantico staff as 2 examples. In both cases you end up back in the fleet most likely as a senior Captain or maybe even a Maj select.
Ultimately as long as you are PME complete (res or non res) , no legal issues and consistent FITREPs, you will promote. The guys from my community I know who got passed either did not have EWS complete or were consistently below average performers. If you get selected for school you are already on the right track and if you get anything close to a decent FITREP from a FAC tour, you are set up for success.
