Anyone else here applied for this board and terrified while waiting for the results?
Yes, I am so anxious but very excited to see how it goes! Good luck!!

I'm also applying for this Board. I'm really hoping I make it in, since I want to serve a full 30 years. After several years as an attorney, I know for a fact that I would much rather be in the Navy like so many others in my family have been. Realizing that was like coming home.

What are your stats, if you don't mind me asking?

Mine are in my signature.

GOOD LUCK! Like you, I plan to do this as a lifetime career so fingers crossed!

I am 21 (turn 22 on Dec. 3), just recently graduated from Barrett the Honors College at Arizona State.

I have two Bachelors of science, one in Forensics (chemistry) and one in criminology/criminal justice. Cumulative GPA of 3.67.

My OAR is a 51.

I was a collegiate competitive cheerleaders and was a research assistant under one of my professors for over a year. Those are the basics!

OK, sounds good. You have pretty relevant degrees (including a STEM degree), a good GPA, and an OAR score that meets the criteria (I think they're requiring a 50+ OAR score this year). So those are some real positives.

Good luck to you, too! Perhaps someday we'll be colleagues.

Law_to_1830, I feel like I've seen you on various other threads before. Have you applied before? Your resume is quite impressive! I also have a question for you: did you take a DLPT to verify any of your language skills? I did for Russian because my OR recommended it and I feel like that is the only thing that will be making my package stand out at the board.

LindseyJordan I'm more in your situation life wise in that I'm a senior at a university in Virginia right now with a 3.3 GPA and a 59 OAR. I study Russian and International Relations (the latter did most of the beating to my GPA which could be better, obviously). I did some research and still take part in some extracurriculars in addition to being a manager at a customer service job. So not the most competitive but still something.

Honestly, from what I’ve seen selection is all over the place sometimes and I think you guys are both competitive in different ways! I wish you guys nothing but the best and would love if we were to be colleagues one day!

Yes, I applied once last year. I was hoping to apply for the Sept. 2018 board, but I didn't get my interview in time. So this will be my second time applying.

I haven't taken the DLPT. I probably should have. I'm quite fluent in Spanish, though my Japanese is still fairly mediocre. It's a really complex language, so it takes a bit longer to learn. From what I've been told, languages are a plus but nowhere near as important as your degree(s), GPA, OAR score, and Letters of Recommendation. Still, I'm sure your Russian language skills will be weighted more heavily than my Spanish or Japanese.

A 59 OAR is a good score! Congrats on that! Russian and International Relations is also obviously a relevant major. So those are both good things.

From my research, it seems like the average GPA of people selected is 3.5 or higher, though your OAR is definitely above average. So that, combined with your major and language skills, could really help. Good luck!

Thank you very much! Agreed!

You're so nice! Best of luck to you both as well! I definitely agree selection is all over the place. My OR has gotten people accepted on IWC boards with lower OAR scores and GPAs than me and I've read about people with lower GPAs than me getting prorec-Ys with wavered OAR scores.

Thank you very much!

You're right my GPA isn't the best. I feel that even a 3.5 wouldn't have helped me much more though. I got a 50 the first time without studying and a 59 with mediocre studying, so if I have to I hope to hit the 60s on the last time. Like I said above, people have gotten in with less competitive packages than me (and in turn both of you!) but whatever happens will happen.

I was trying to give an objective analysis, pointing out both the pros and cons. I certainly wasn't meaning to diminish your very real positives as a candidate.

A 59 OAR score is already quite good! Plus, you have real advantages with your highly relevant degree, relevant language skills, and especially your age. So you have a real shot. Even if you don't get in for some reason, you're young and you still have plenty of time to beef up your package. You can try to raise your GPA by the time you graduate, go for a Master's degree, or even re-take the OAR and get an even better score (again, 59 is already definitely higher than the majority I see on here). That's a big deal and a real advantage.

I can't do that. I can't raise my GPA since I've already graduated, I can't afford to go for another degree since I have a family to support, and I can't change my major to something more relevant. The only things I can do to enhance my packet are get more interviews from higher ranking officers, and keep trying to learn foreign languages in what limited free time I have.

So don't take any of what I said as a slam against you. You have *major* advantages that I don't have and can never have.

I didn't take offense to your objective analysis; I'm sorry that came off that way because I agree with everything you said! I like to think I'm in the ballpark at the very least but I definitely have to be realistic. Everyone has their own strengths, that's for sure. I really wonder if languages really do help with this though - while everyone says that it doesn't matter no matter what the program guidelines say, they can't be accepting DLPT scores for nothing. Who knows. I just want to know the results now! I hate waiting!

OK, sounds good.

Agreed. The recruiters on here certainly know more than any of us what the Boards tend to select. Of course, only the Board members themselves actually know what they're looking for each time. So while we can work with probabilities based on GPA, school attended, degree/major, OAR score, work experience, etc. none of us really *know.*

I've likewise been told that they aren't terribly focused on foreign language skills, but you also have a Russian/International Studies degree on top of that - which I'm sure will catch a few eyes.

I completely understand. I look forward to hearing our results and, hopefully, getting to finally embark on my Naval career. I also hope that the three of us will be colleagues soon.

Is the list something my recruiter would get if I’m on it too?

It makes me a little anxious not having confirmation my package was sent so I wanted to double check with my recruiter I’m on the list too. Thanks!
