Just Assigned SNA

I am a 1/C MIDN who was just assigned student naval aviator literally yesterday. I wanted to open up a thread for anybody to ask questions about what the process was like, and how I got to this point. I am not going to advise anybody or tell you what to do, as I am not trained to do so. So again, ask me anything and hopefully I can give you some insight.

NROTC? What part, do you suppose, did your academic class standing play? Was that the primary factor do you think, or a combination of other factors? What?

I'm a MIDN 2/C and I was wondering what your stats looked like last semester before you picked up? Specifically GPA, PT scores, and ASTB. Our unit did not do so hot in pilot selection so I'm pretty curious to see what other guys did to get it.

Yes, NROTC. I think what mattered most personally was the ASTB. I don't sit the board so I cannot say definitively, but on the ASTB I scored 8 8 7 (FOFAR was the 7). As far as I am aware those are competitive numbers, so I would say that helped me the most.

My service assignment package was as follows:
GPA: Tier 1 appx. 3.6
PRT: around 280
ASTB: AQR 8, PFAR 8, FOFAR 7

We had a lot of pilot selects, some with less competitive packages than mine. I would imagine your peers would have had lower ASTB scores, so ask them where they did poorly so you can know what to expect.

What was your hardest section on the ASTB?
Hardest? Definitely the throttle/joystick portion. I felt like I did poorly at the time, but my score ended up being alright. On the academic side of it, the MCT was where I lost most points. I went into the test having only taken a couple of practice tests, so I could have studied and maybe done better on a second go-around. That of course would have posed the risk of getting lower scores, so I decided against a second try.

Great thanks, did you use many outside resources to study for the test as a whole? How was the math skills portion?

We have the Barron's study guide book at my unit, so we just share it around. Again I only took a couple practice tests, so that was as far as my studying went. I definitely killed the math portion, but I am pretty solid when it comes to math. It isn't difficult mathematics (i.e. calculus), it is more basic calculations designed to trip you up.

First off, congrats! This is the first in a series of selections you'll go though.

As an NROTC student, your ASTB weighs very little in selection. Honestly, it's may be a deal breaker, but it's more pass/fail than anything. I'd say your PNS Class Ranking and Degree & GPA had more to do with your selection than anything.

Ask your aviation advisor. He/she can give you definitive answers about what mattered the most in selection.

Is this true? I've always been told that your degree doesn't matter for pilot.

Thanks for this knowledge! I was not aware that there was an aviation score actually calculated during the selection process.
