Idiot question in coming.. on the speedy pro, how often do you nick up the front sapphire? I saw a picture of one from the side and never realized just how far out the crystal sticks out from the case.

Sapphire is strong. It would take a real effort to scratch or nick it. I've beat them about the cockpit for years without a mark.

My steel bracelets on the other hand....you just learn to live with the scratches or spend every evening polishing them out. I'm lazy.

I don't have the sapphire crystal on my Speedy...I have the much softer and more easily scratchable hesalite crystal. You're right...the crystal [both sapphire and hesalite] regarding the Speedy are very domed and "out there". Like HAL said, the sapphire is very scratch resistant. But it's also more brittle and a sharp blow could shatter it.

Regardless, I wear a Rothco or a Raine Inc. protective band when I fly with my Speedy...mostly to protect the bezel and the bezel insert [as well as the soft hesalite crystal] from dings. I would think that either a Rothco or a Raine Inc. protective band with the protective cover deployed would lessen the chance of shattering a sapphire crystal.

The Hesalite crystal, basically plexiglass, is easy to polish and remove most scratches - any mildly abrasive plastic polish will suffice (similar to what you polish car headlights or a motorcycle windscreen).

Obviously you guys are a little biased, but still, where would you rank Omega Speedmaster with the other "luxury sport watches" like IWC Pilot Chrono, or the Bremont watches?

And what about the saphire sandwich Omega? I think the movement looks really cool without the weight the auto watches have, but it doesn't have the "approved for space flight" on the back.
