Paying a significant amount of money to avoid a 1 in 10000-20000 chance of an inconvenience for which you'll be well compensated is idiotic. If you want to avoid these "catastrophic" consequences - which, in the vast majority of cases is absurd hyperbole - you already pretty much can. Buy a full fare ticket, or better yet, a business or first class ticket and you're even less likely to experience said catastrophe. And schedule your trip smartly - if arriving 12 hours later than planned is going to ruin the rest of your life, you should probably book an earlier flight.

Judging by the timestamp, you were probably posting when I clarified sevenhelmet's question. The "catastrophic" remark was directed towards the remote possibility of severe political reactions towards the airlines, not towards individual ticket holders.

On a completely more cheerful note, there are those of us here old enough to remember when a United stewardess became the 1981 Playmate of the Year (Terri Welles for those curious)

Wait, what airline runs as a monopoly in the US?

I know we allow monopolies, like MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL; cable companies in local markets, etc., to exist, but what airline in the U.S. does this? Are there some regulations that are stupid? Absolutely... take a look at Southwest's history with Dallas Love Field; but what regulation allows any of our airlines to operate as a monopoly?

The word we're looking for here is "oligopoly."

Yeah, that I got, but that's far different from a monopoly for someone spouting off "economics 101 bro."

Are there high barriers to entry due to a combination of both startup and regulatory costs? Yes. It's the prime market for an oligarchy. And even then, they are mostly oligarchies in regionally specific markets, outside of maybe the big 3 plus Southwest.

As a side note, United is suing Alaska Airlines for putting a picture of United's youngest flight attendant on their jet's tails, without UAL's permission.

...But the CAL new hires on the other hand...
