Female applicants and haircuts

I realize that this forum had gone off on a few different tangents, but has anyone heard if recent classes have had women cut their hair? I got my PRO Y a couple weeks ago, and am totally curious.

Just graduated two weeks ago, regulations were changed with the new class coming in, haircits are no longer required if you prefer to keep it. If your hair is longer than chin or collar length you will have to keep it up within regs (a bun typically) at all times.

Excellent. Thank you! My hair is in an awkward in-between length, its right at my shoulders and can't quite get it into a bun. I'm hoping it will grow out long enough by the time I ship off. Still haven't gotten my FINSEL, so I have some time :)

Would you recommend cutting it or learning to keep it within regs?

Adding onto this question... If you hair is cut short (collar length or shorter), how do you wear it when you do PT? I have seen a couple of video clips where there are girls training with their hair short, and hanging all down in their face while running, etc. When your hair is short, are you not allowed to tie it back at all? Or wear headbands or anything?

Thanks!

That's not too clear cut, as it puts the responsibility for making that call on the CO. You could always give somebody over there a call though and ask.
I think it's just one of those things you'll figure out when you get there though.
If you're looking for an easily-mamaged hairstyle, the pixie cut seems to be making a comeback where I'm currently at, both in the wardroom and on the deckplates.

Has anyone had any experience with having a shoulder-length cut (bob) with a bit of your neck shaved underneath? I actually have a couple of inches shaved off underneath just to keep things cool in the summer, so I'm sure I'll have to grow it out before I go or chop it off.

I would have to see the cut to know, but Navy regs stipulate that a hairstyle cannot appear "faddish". For a female, if it can be seen that part of your hair is shaved off, then that would definitely be out of regs.

That's kind of what I was guessing. Hopefully it'll grow out in a few months. If not, it's not the first time I've had a pixie cut. I appreciate the input.

Also, females are not allowed to have their heads shaved. Though this is specifically referring to the whole head, it would also apply to any part of the head. Beyond that, the "faddish" rule is what would apply.

Definitely got that one. Luckily my hair grows like a weed. I believe you can have it close cropped (sorry, used this interchangably with shaved) under current regs http://www.navy.mil/ah_online/um/FHCloseCropped.html

You're right. I was thinking actual shaved. You can definitely have it cut very short. You just couldn't have part of your head that way and part not. If you let the undergrowth grow out just so that it's long enough to pin to the back of your head with bobby pins, you'll be fine. It doesn't all have to make it into your bun. I'm actually just going to go with a chin length bob, so I won't have to deal with a bun. You have a choice now though.

I definitely think I will be going for the close cropped look. If my hair grows out, I'll look like my profile pic and I don't think that would fall within Navy regs lol.
