Depends on how much shit you have and how many people you know and are willing to be roomates with. Average Joe Ensign usually lives with 2-3 other ENS on the beach and makes a lot of money with just the clothes in his seabag. The story gets complicated if you add a family and stuff you have to move around, especially if you end up waiting 4-5 months to class up. YMMV.

Ok, thanks. I have enough for a small 1 br apartment. I'll just plan on stashing it in a storage locker until primary.

I'll be heading to OCS here shortly and I am trying to figure out what I should do with my things. I'm currently enlisted and stationed on the west coast. My wife will be moving back home (east coast) and working there for a year or two while I am going through the SNA pipeline. I was planning on having my stuff packed for a military move prior to OCS and shipped to Pensacola when I transferred from OCS. Is this a good idea? I thought I had it all planned out but after reading this thread I don't know exactly what to expect. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I did get Family separation pay. However, it went away as soon as I checked into TRAWING6.

Apparently you won't get a PCS move until you get to primary. I think there is a 600 lb allowance for TAD but don't remember where I saw that.

I just heard from a LTJG in my command that married SNAs get PCS orders to API life the NFOs do. Is this true?

PCS'ing is not equal to having accompanied orders. The real question is whether or not married guys get accompanied or unaccompanied orders. According to wlawrl, API orders are unaccompanied. I've been trying to get a straight answer myself, but if his gouge is accurate, then expect to go solo to API. Hopefully I'll be able to talk to my detailer soon. Its super nice not knowing when/ if to put the house up for sale...

I just want to figure out when I will have my stuff delivered by the movers... My wife will be working back at my home of record so accompanied or not doesn't matter too much as long as I can get my stuff.

If you are married prior to orders being cut you will get PCS orders to the TRAWING at Whiting with an intermediate stop in Pensacola for API.

I'll second this. My orders had Trawing 5, NAS Whiting as my PCS, with API as my Intermediate.

Neither SNAs or SNFOs get paid for their PCS until they check into Primary. API is a TAD enroute, and they won't pay you DLA until Primary. As I said earlier, they will move your stuff whenever you want because you get one move on any set of PCS orders. However, you will have to foot the bill for all the stuff that comes with moving like first month's rent, deposits, etc.

Thank you all for the help! I'm just trying to minimize any dilemmas now while I can.

No worries. My advice would be to meet some guys at OCS that you would be willing to room cheap with while you're in API. That way you'll be able to afford your wife living in one place and you living alone in Pensacola. After API, you'll have to adjust fire as necessary.
