Now, there's some brave souls.....(EKA WHALES)
No shit.

They would show up on the ball w/ only one or two --max three -- passes available because of their heavy empty weight -- sometimes w/ no BINGO field available. Steady guys in the groove, most were "old Navy" types -- senior O-3's and VERY senior O-4's and none were going anywhere anytime soon up the "career ladder" ... but they were hardcore and very, very good around the ship.

They weren't recruiting poster boys -- they just liked to fly.

That's where I got my WHALE stick-time ... w/ the VQ-1 WHALE det ... but only out of CUBI!! No WHALE look-see's behind the ship for this kid. :D

I'm liking this thread...as you might imagine

A few more older VQ photos...including the original PR-31

The whales aren't EKA-3, though, just "straight" EA-3Bs.

Yeah, thanks for the pix ... when they cruised w/ us, they had the Playboy Bunny on the tail and their BALL CALL was usually 'Playboy' or "Porterfield', if memory serves. Then they got 'Deep Sea' mixed in there too ... very creative guys ... :D

Here's one off the MIDWAY, w/ the "bunny" PC'ed into some amorphous cartoon figure ... still, he "might" be doing something to that black ball ... :)

So I heard good seastories from one of the CT's on that mission...without getting anyone in trouble, what was the pilots take? What did they actually lose after hitting their little asian roadbump?
Naaaaaa ... let's not get into that again on what is an interesting thread -- and good & clean, too ... :D

We had a AW's hissy-fit thread about that subject a couple of years ago -- try search and/or PM's ... please.

I thought I had some other photos with additional bunny buggery, but I guess not. My favorite whale photo is this line-up from VQ-2...

Not much use in asking, it is all classified. Certainly not worth losing anyone's life over. ;)

This isn't the place to talk about that. LT Shane Osborne was the pilot on PR-32 and wrote a book about the incident, Born to Fly. Shane is now the Nebraska State Treasurer.
