Looks like the Russian are planning on building a new carrier, not sure it will ever see the light of day but at least they can dream!

With all the talk of potential customers, potential requirements, and a vaguely un-specified "jet powered AEW aircraft" it sounds like a fun "pie in the sky" by the KRSC. Cool model though; looks like a kit bash of Nimitz, Varyag, and QE class carriers.

The Rooskies are only making it so they can sell it to the Chinese....
Except that the Chinese have already started construction on their own indigenous carrier. They have been increasingly developing their own hardware to be as independent of other nations as possible.

Like @lowflier03 said, I thought the Chinese had the capability to build their own CV.

Only other potential realistic customers I could think of are Russia and India.

I hope they try to build it, sink a lot of money into it that could be spent on other things, and have it suck. Congrats, you've built one carrier with a weird EMALS and ski jump system, and chances are the thing is going to be broke most of the time anway.

If there is one thing I've learned about carriers so far, it is that you gotta go quality and quantity or go home. One boat that is broke all the time (or even just doing normal maintenance) is useless. A system where you've got many to put out at once is more useful.

Its probably easier to build airstrips on artificial islands in the Spratlys...

Why are other countries not named Brazil or France so afraid of the steam/EM catapult?

Cats are expensive and cantankerous. The ski jump works perfectly well; there's been periodic discussion over the years of putting them on our big gators. The official reason for not adopting them is losing the forward helo spots; I'm pretty sure the "real" reason is it looks funny.

The French use cats for the same reason we do - because they always have. The Brazilians use them because they buy their boats secondhand from the French.

The Indians are already building their own boats. Vikrant is afloat, another is under construction. They also overhauled and modified a Kiev they bought off the Russians - it was apparently such a nightmare program that they went to indigenous-build only.

Considering all the "carriers are obsolete" deep thinkers these days, there sure are a lot of countries building or buying their own.
