Not quite OCS, but I will be up at DCOIC in Newport in about 7 weeks. While I am there I will, for religious reasons, need to eat a vegetarian (preferably vegan) diet. How difficult will this be based on what they have available in the dining hall?
One thing to consider: destroying your body over a religious concern may be unwise. Even my Muslim students are allowed to break their fast during flight training while Ramadan is going on. Something to consider whether this particular observance is worth the hassle. Not knocking your decision, just trying to give you an option.

Most get their orders in the final two weeks of OCS. If you are aviation you won't get PCS orders until classing up for API, you just get TAD to Pensacola until classing up.
False. I have follow on orders to Miton, FL and allows for a pcs move. But I am also married. Unless your a SWO you won't get orders till the final week.

Eating vegetarian will be easy. Just eat rice/potatoes, and veggies every lunch and dinner. For breakfast, you'll get all the pancakes, french toast sticks, or waffles that you can eat. Oh, and lots of dinner rolls, too.

Avoiding malnutrition from not eating any protein while PTing fairly often will be a lot tougher, though.

Yeah I've never seen anyone awarded a marksmanship ribbon. For us its typically something that the TMs say we can wear after a gun shoot
To expand on this:

The MAs or TMs are supposed to maintain all of your small arm qualification paperwork, including your most recent shoot for each weapon. They are supposed to give it back to you when you transfer so that you can provide it to your next command. That would 'prove' that you qualified for a ribbon or medal.

As for it being in your ESR, it seems like it's one of those things no one really cares about. You're not going to get promoted or passed over because of it.

OH MY GOD I totally forgot about French toast sticks. Those things were phenomenal. There's gotta be some way to make those at home.

Yeah I wasn't worried about the promotion or whatever. It was more I don't have that record but am supposed to bring proof of all my awards and metals and my ribbon and metals are already mounted.

Thanks for all the input about going vegetarian. After a lot of reflection and contemplation, I will most likely just do a modified vegetarian (no meat or fish but eat dairy and eggs) diet while there and wait until I am home again to begin the real fasting.

On that note, when major religious holidays occur during training, is there an opportunity in the evening to attend services? I will be there for Ash Wednesday and would like to attend mass if at all possible.

Don't count on eating any dairy at OCS. Maybe they wisened up but when I attended you were not allowed any dairy products at all, including milk.

Do they do that for everyone who eats at Ney Hall or just OCS? I'm going for DCOIC and I thought that the only restricted food for us was coffee.

A) Chow hall is now almost fully unlocked for OCS candidates. They can have basically everything except soda and desserts, I think. Which totally sucks; I worked my ass off for that peanut butter.
B) She's going for DCOIC, not OCS.

EDIT: Oops, we all posted at the same time.
As for Ash Wednesday, I can't say for sure, but they let us go to the chapel for Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday, so I'd say odds are good.

No idea. My bad, made a bad assumption (this IS the 'stupid questions about OCS' thread though!)
Not a bad assumption. I'm the one sneaking in here where I don't belong.

Thanks, Tycho. I was hoping that there at least existed the possibility. Obviously, a lot will depend on circumstances once there.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled OCS questions. :D

I believe that you still have TAD orders to Pensacola for API, right? My orders were TAD for API with follow on orders to Milton. You won't get any money for your PCS move until you check into primary. At least that was what I was told when I got down here. But you are right I should have said if you are single you won't get PCS orders until week one of API.

No you can PCS whenever you want because your follow on orders are to the same geographic location. (If you're married and have follow on orders) Now, that also means that since they PCSed me from my home of record to this geographic location, they won't move me from NASP to NASWF. I would have to do it myself or pay for it out of pocket, which is why I'm living all the way over in Governors Gate.... Also Go Noles.

Ya PSD has already processed my application and I have a pick up date.
