That's why I laugh at the guilty white American liberal Hipsters who act "enlightened" and smarter than the rest of us moderate/libertarian/conservatives, when they have absolutely no idea of the complete and utter overt racism and xenophobia that exists abroad. They fancy themselves very open minded and us as knuckle-dragging neanderthals. How narrow-minded.....

I always chuckle when hear a blowhard say "It's an ignored part of our history that need's to be told". The story of the 332nd Fighter Group is about the only story the general public has been told over the last 20 years about WWII aviation.

When I was doing museum work, I was charged to convince the Cleveland, OH chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen to donate their artifacts and papers to our museum and archives. I was a regular attendee of their meetings and they found it refreshing that I wanted to know what it was like flying a P-51 in combat and didn't obsess over race (they made me a honorary member). I know race has a large part in their story, but they thought of themselves as fighter pilots and soldiers.

Can we at least dispense with the fiction that the Tuskegee Airmen "never lost a bomber?" The fact that they weren't supermen does not detract from their honorable service.

Looking at it now though, if a new squadron CO came aboard with that speech, I'd think he was a self-important douchebag.
The red tails posts made this resurface, but we were talking about the Great Santini at work the other day so I played this clip. All us rotorheads had a great laugh at this ridiculous speech. We figured after he left the room all the JOs collectively said "what the fuck?"

I saw Red Tails today and it was really, really, really bad. I would recommend not wasting your money, or at least waiting for it to be on netflix/redbox.

Care to elaborate?

I've got no interest in going to see it; in fact, I never go to the theater to watch movies.

It wasn't really about flying and was all about race. There was also no real plot, it was just a bunch of asides strung together for 2 hours. All of the dialogue felt really forced and was just kind of awkward.

Constantly lost in the sauce....
Meh Red Tails was coated with lots and lots of sugar to make it more of a mass appeal. I think that is what hurts it the most... but Lucas said in the outset that his target was black teenagers and it may have worked in that sense because I've received some messages from relatives on facebook who said that they thought of me when they saw it, one even stating on his status "Where can I get pilot lessons?" LOL

Anyway in response to the comment above....we weren't exactly treated like first class citizens in those times... the racial parts of it seemed a bit tame compared to what I have read in books about what these men actually endured.... also I think they ripped through those 262's a little bit too easily...

Redtails is maybe the worst movie I have seen. To the average civilian maybe different but the Cg was crap, and nothing was realistic, a p51 doing a loop in 20ft and shooting down a bandit... It was a cartoon. Dialogue was pretty corny too "man!I really hope we see those red tails again." guess some people liked it, the lady behind us was crying, but I just wanted to walk out the whole movie.

So....do you go to the theater to read books?

Let me rephrase: I will not pay $7-15 to watch a movie. I will go to the theater to watch a movie only if someone else is buying (ha!) or if my sister-in-law, who works for a theater chain, can get me free tix.

If, for whatever reason, I want to see the tripe that passes for cinema these days, I'll wait for the movies to make it to Redbox...and even then, I'll see the movies only if I have a Redbox code for a free rental.
