I dont know what else a horizontal stab like that. I also can't think of why an F-104 would be on a ship either, though

I had to look up the hi-res version on www.navy.mil because I was stumped at first. It looks like a pair of L-29s (that or the love children of an F-104 and a Yak-38).

I wonder how much wind across the deck they'd need to takeoff on a deck roll? Supposedly they rotate about 2,000 feet down a normal runway. Hmmm, ship... about 20, true winds... 10, 20, 30? :)

It may just be a ferry job and have no intention of flying off the ship. There are several L-29's that fly out of K-Bay and this might have been a cheap way for the company to get another one out to Hawaii (since the ship was going to RIMPAC). Just a guess, though.

That is exactly the rumor and that they augmented the existing assets to provide targets for the assembled ships of RIMPAC.

I was assuming it was just one of those old ass planes the yellow shirts use to practice moving stuff around on the flight deck. I didn't think it was actually a functioning aircraft.

Verified.

They screwed up the tower pattern at KBay all the time that month. . .
