PRT Test

So I've been trying to get in shape lately and things are going pretty well (sorta). My pushups are great, I'm greatly improving on my sit-ups, but my running is what really could hold me back. Of course I don't plan on doing the PRT immediately so I have time to get in shape, but is there a certain score they prefer? I see the chart with 'Outstanding, Excellent, etc.' but do they want all Outstandings or do they just take averages and such? I plan to push myself hard, just seeing how they score things or how much my application hinges on a few seconds of running.

Also, I read on another site that swimming is part of the PRT. Is this true nowadays or is it strictly pushups/situps/1.5 mile run? If swimming is involved, well...I certainly have some work to do.

Thanks for the help!

Do some reading in the PRT part of the forum.

The PRT is strictly running, pu, su but swimming can be sub'd for the running for those who prefer it. At OCS you will run the PRT (as I understand it). I believe your pre-ship PFT has to be a good-low or higher.

Running by itself won't make you faster. You have to work on hill sprints, 30/60/90's, weighted squats, deadlifts, etc... It's all about strengthening all the muscles in your core and legs so they can withstand the pounding of running long distances at a decent speed.

Total bullshit. You can run and only run and you WILL get faster if you push yourself.

+1. If you run consistently and really push yourself every time you will definitely see huge improvements. I find it best to alternate between long runs (4-6 miles) at a slower pace and short runs (1.5-2 miles) at my absolute fastest.

Not that cross-training will hurt anything, it just isn't necessary.

This is true, but only for experienced runners, for new runner, simply running will make you better. when I started I improved my 1.5 mile time by 70 seconds after just a couple weeks of practice.

I never lift weights or do any of that other BS. I started half marathon training, and my PRT run time went down significantly. Running alone can and will improve run times.

Does anyone know what the minimums are to pass the PRT prior to going to OCS? Is it 42 pushups in 2 minutes, 50 situps in 2 minutes and 1.5mile run in 13:15? I have heard that it's 47 pushups, 58 situps and 1.5mile run in 12:00... which is correct?

Thanks!

Agreed. Different running workouts (intervals, pyramids, negative splits, tempo, fartlek, track work, hills, etc.) will make you seriously fast, but you need a solid distance base to get the most out of them. People often question why I tell people that it's important to be able to cover five or more miles comfortably while training for the mile or 1.5. You don't need the aerobic capacity for the event itself, but it is a must for the short/high-intensity training that you need to excel in that event. In other words, work on slowly increasing the volume of work before you start working in the speed---it will pay dividends. I went from a 7:45 mile to a 4:40 mile in a year and a half without touching a weight. I ran a lot. If you want to get better at running, RUN.

That being said, there is a place for strength training in moderation. The same goes for cross training.

The best way to improve your running is to learn to enjoy it. Bring your iPod, plan some varied routes, run with a buddy and have a conversation. If you run enough you'll actually start to enjoy it. That said, mix it up with some moderate weight training, stairs, hill runs, long/short distances, etc.

I never said he had to go squat 400lbs 4x a week. What I should've said is that running by itself won't make you that much faster. Yes you'll see improvements but if you want to go from a 13 or 14 min mile and a half to 9 min then doing some basic lifting (properly) once a week or so never hurt anyone.

This is solid advice. I can't run with the ipod going, but give me somebody that's a little faster than me and I get just PO'd enough to try to outrun them. Running will become fun for you after the initial 'suckiness' wears off. It went from being something I lamented doing to one of my greatest stress relievers. I did 7 miles tonight and wanted to keep going just 'cause it felt so good.

Still total bullshit. Running will make you much faster if you incorporate sprinting with LSD runs to improve endurance. You do not need to lift weights to go from a 13 minute 1.5mi to a 9 minute 1.5mi.

What are LSD runs? They sound like fun
