Killed in action the week before, the body of Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City , Georgia , just south of Atlanta , on June 11, 2009 .

The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough , Georgia . A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time.

The link below is a short travelogue of that day's remarkable and painful journey. Watch this if you wish to have some of your faith in people restored.

Absolutely awesome post...while it is never a good thing to lose a soldier, sometimes in todays world it is easy to forget how great the people of our country really are and that video is proof, I proud that I'm going to be serving them...thanks for posting that ken!

I've got to say that this is one big reason that I am proud to say I'm from the south. I've lived in three of the four corners of the US so far and so far the south is the only place I have ever seen people stop for funeral processions, not to mention something of this nature.

It made me want to cry when I saw the boom trucks holding the flag up, and when the kids had the "freedom isn't free," banner. I've never seen anything close to that before, amazing.

It's a big thing in the Northeast. Where I'm from (Long Island), for firefighter or military funeral processions each local fire department sends an aerial and they pair off to do a flag arch. It is a truly awesome sight.

Last summer the volunteer fire departments of Nassau County, NY did a sending off for Marines going to Iraq. We lined the streets with fire apparatus and all of us in uniform for their departure. They left in waves, so we were there from 10pm to 6am---all night. We had at least 15 flag arches and what must have been a mile of apparatus and firefighters from most of the 71 departments in the county. We also had a full fire and police escort for them. It was awesome to be a part of something like that.

So, this kind of thing happens up in Yankee land too!

I think if we did that in the Bay Area we'd have hippies complaining that we're "wasting" tax dollars. People here really don't seem to care, Michael Jackson was on the front page for a week. "In other news: 6 soldiers killed in the bloodiest attack in 3 months."

I work in hospitalities so all day I deal with people who will lie to your face and steal anything that isn't bolted down. I was just really surprised/glad to see that there are people out there who still respect what I hope to soon be a part of :)
