Nice Landing!

That landing, choosing that road, and landing with traffic are all very impressive. All with a failure at low altitude. Its hard enough to plan when you have altitude let alone losing it at 1000' maybe 1500' (?). Well done.

-2 for flying a rickety P.O.S. and +5 for head work, so over all MIF for the block. Nice job.

Not really "rickety." It's probably a KitFox or similar type aircraft and actually looks in pretty good shape. The engine sounds like a Rotax, which is in pretty much every kit-plane nowadays.

y'know, after watching that vid again I realize that those guys are damn lucky.

I wouldn't have tried for a second restart, especially that low.

The fact that the engine even sputtered to life for a few seconds both times saved their asses.

But hey, it's easy to criticize from out here, only they knew for sure what needed to be done.

With my students that are interested in experiencing it, I will pull the mixture on downwind, slow the airplane until the prop stops, then let them dead stick it to the runway. It's a very controlled situation but lets them see how the airplane behaves with no engine. These guys were lucky that a road was there they could land on, and cool enough to not panic. Good thing they didn't run a stop sign, they could have gotten a ticket. :D

Wow. Sometimes an IP back in T-6s would say something like, "I'd rather land it on I-10 than eject." I think not.

The Air Force doesn't allow forced landings on roads... I remember asking during an EP class in T-6 ground school....

"Sir, we're in the middle of Oklahoma... you mean to say that if we see a wide open road in the middle of no where, no cars, no power lines, no people, that we have to eject vice set it down on the road?"

The answer was a firm "yes."

In Las Cruces they wanted us to ditch next to a road (or bailout) vice actually landing on the road because even if you can't see obstructions, it doesn't mean they don't exist. It's hard to see that stuff from high up and when you finally do, it might be too late.
