I believe FN already makes a significant number of M16s (maybe M4s, but you get the point) for the military. My guess is this isn't really news. All 3 probably have a large number or significant contracts with the military.

Its just the government giving the gun companies a bail out too. We just get guns in return :)

Without getting into the incredibly boring details, the type of contract each of the contractors was awarded (indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity) is only a "foot in the door", so to speak. It's like getting your product in a catalog - the government isn't obligated to purchase from any of the three, but has the option to make an award to any or all at its discretion. My guess is they'll probably buy samples from each and make an award to the lowest bidder.

This is a different weapon than M-16/M-4 - this weapon will replace the M-249 with an AR type weapon that has the unique characteristic of firing sustained full auto from an open bolt position. Interesting twist!!!!

Open Bolt eh? Didn't work out well for the MAC-10.

Is anyone "in the know" as far as to why this is a good weapon to procure?

I watched the future weapons special and almost every point the bald headed dude made was terrible.

His big thing was that it fires from the *gasp* OPEN BOLT and somehow that is better, and also that it could use the same 30-round magazine that a regular M-16 uses. Also, you don't have to worry about your bandoleer flopping about...

Unfortunately, AFAIK there aren't any real major advantages to firing from an open bolt and the disadvantage is that the chamber is open to sand/dirt. The SAW can use 30 round magazines. He looked like a retard running around with a SAW with loose bandoleers, as if they don't usually just use the 200-round drum which contains the ammunition...

His only real valid point was that it is smaller and lighter and that it is a less easily identifiable target, because it looks like an M-16.

Open bolt is generally more suitable for sustained fire as it doesn't build up heat as quickly and is less susceptible to cook-off, hence its use in MG's (except, most notably for the M2).

LWRC had an entry that fired from closed bolt on semi and open on auto.

As for the IAR? It's been a longstanding project of Gunner Ebby to return to a BAR/RPK type weapon, to address the following deficiencies of the SAW:
*Only accurate from a prone position, and awkward to fire offhand or from a kneeling position
*Increased weight leaves the SAW gunner behind in an assault
*Though it uses 5.56, 5.56 link is still a separate ammo source, and SAW's have mixed reliability with the magwell as they age
*In a 1st/2nd block environment, the SAW is a poor weapon for a discretionary battlefield

I heard secondhand that in a field trial, a HBAR M16 produced twice the hit probability of a SAW. And I believe the original intent was to use a large-capacity mag like the Beta-C (or the large capacity mags used for the RPK), but after that proved to be unreliable, it was dropped. I wouldn't be suprised to see a larger capacity 5.56 mag in development.

As it stands, the SAW's are to be kept around in the platoon TO&E to be reissued if a need arises (say, in Afghanistan's rural battlefield).
