Motorcycle - To Sell Or Not To Sell: I Need Some Advice

easy dude, it only lasts a few more months. :)

beside, they might not have any instructors for it by the time you leave.
 
Sort of off topic, but any of you guys take the risk of not putting your bike in a garage? If so, what security measures do you take?

The thing that bugs me is that it seems anybody could just pull up, put your bike in their truck, and drive off.
 
When I had a garage, the bike went in it but more for protection from the elements than theft. Here, it sits in a carport-like shelter to keep rain off, but not much more.

I don't even bother locking the column (disclaimer- I live on base, and its a 2nd key on my bike).

I have full coverage with a cheap deductible. If someone really wants to steal my Triumph, they will anyways.

Parking it at the store/grocer/movies/hooters is probably the most risky thing anyways.

For my dirtbike, I normally keep it in my storage unit, but when I have it at "home" I put a disc lock on the front brake, and a normal padlock on the back disc. I will cable lock it to the support columns of the "bikeport" if I will be gone at night.

(no keys on the dirtbike)

Or, there is a company called Scorpio that makes alarms I've seen used. They have a keychain-pager that pages you when your alarm goes off. Other than that, disk locks. That's about all.
 
I'm at TBS and I split a storage unit with 2 other guys. Its definitely more to keep the bikes out of the elements rather than any risk of theft.

Lo jack is only good if you notice your bike is gone within +-5 hours of when it's stolen, otherwise the bike will be chopped and gone. lo jack has a new one that has a pager that will tell you if it's being tampered with, for a little more $$$. I will add that it has worked several times, so it's money worth investing, and lowers your insurance rate. Insurance like MB said is the best way to go, you will never stop a determined thief. But personally I park it in lit areas with a lot of people around if I can, and then a garage with my truck parked in front of it at home. Disk brake locks are good, but if they want your bike, they pick it up and throw it in a truck. A friend of mine witnessed 4 guys with a mattress that had handles on all four corners, they jumped out, laid it next to the bike, pushed the bike on top, pulled it up on the truck and drove off! I think it took less then 30 seconds... moral of the story is just get insurance, the safest way to go. my 2 cents
 
Thats a good looking ass on that gixxer! Not a fan of the stock pipe, but the newer ones arent as bad as the previous generations. In CA I use a disk lock and lock the bars. I usually cover the bike to keep it out of the elements and to keep people from knowing what it is. I had basic liability on my bike only because I couldnt afford full coverage. But I agree there is nothing you can really do to stop a determined thief. My next bike will be fully covered. But even still having it in a locked garage or storage unit (out of sight) is probably the safest place to keep it other than inside your living room. ha ha.
 
I have heard through a reliable source that the original draft of the recent White Letter from the Commandant specifically outlawed the operation of motorcycles by all Marines. It was changed at the last minute to include all of the PPE, but my question is how likely is it that I am going to be told sometime in the near future that I am no longer allowed to ride my motorcycles? It certainly seems like its headed that direction.

My first bike is a 2001 SV 650, drag bars, yoshi pipe yada yada... anyways, in this thread I have to say that the assessments of the lil bike that could are spot on. However when I moved from the Black hills and curvy roads of Rapid City SD to the flat nothing that is the east side of the state, The poor lil SV goes un-challenged :(
However last summer I added a new bike to my list, and it has been a hit with the local town. It is a 2008 Royal Enfield Bullett 500. Very Very fun bike, well not at interstate speeds, but it is a blast and a heckuva head turner too. Rode it out to Sturgis (7 hr Ride) and I cant even approximate how many times my picture was taken on the main drag. Added a sidecar a few months later and I was able to ride it in the winter. 50-60 mpg is not something to pass up.

Now on with it, Are there any AW's on here that are planning on attending the biggest party of the year (Sturgis) this summer?


btw, I think something was said about finding a difference between the hardcore riders and the ones who do it only at greatest convenience. Well... Pictures say a thousand words. Oh, and it was 8 degrees that day, very nice for that time of year ;)

I am looking for some bike advice regarding OCS and the move to PCola (permitting that I pass all my flight physicals and such).

I just sold my 05 Yamaha R6 last night for a good price and located a 2007 GSXR with 135 miles on it for 6 grand. I figure its a steal so I was going to check it out tonight, however I am not sure it is a good time to buy.

I leave for OCS in 9 weeks and it will be stored until the Spring and I would hopefully be able to trailer it to Florida. If i were to do this, would I be responsible for the cost of renting a trailer or would the Navy move the bike for me? Also, what are some thoughts as to waiting until I move to Pensacola or grabbing it now to enjoy for a few weeks? I am not sure how the used bike market is down there but this is definately a good deal that I have to consider.
 
Yeah, no kidding. I made it to Sturgis this year (sadly, not on my bike) but I'm going to do all that I can to make it again with the Harley. It's awesome out there and the Black Hills are beautiful. So many motorcycles, too.

where'd you stay out there?

at any given time you might have been able to see me with the side car upside down cussing at my clutch with a wrench in my hand..
