Is it true that the Marines have a quota to reach for female officers?

This is probably really stupid but I have to ask. Is it true that certain branches of the military have certain quotas to reach for recruiting female officers?

I'm getting ready to retake my astb next month and put in a package for nfo. This just sounded so bizarre to me. I would hate to know that I would get accepted for the reason that I was a female and I got extra points for that?

It doesn't matter. Pass the tests, be a good aviator, don't take anything too serious and kick ass. Basically, be a good Marine and prove you deserve to be there. Who cares why it happens.

I'm actually putting in a package for the navy but I heard that it was easier for a female to get in the marines which is my second choice. Also I heard that I would have to go through six months of sear school and have to run with a pack that was half my weight? Can you clarify?

Six months of S.E.R.E school is a big no, you would probably go insane if you had to do that. As for the pack... I have no clue, go Navy.

Me? No im an OC. But I am aware of a six month school called TBS that all new Marine Officers have to go through, which is probably what you were taking about.

So it would bother you if you knew you got accepted into the service you applied for because you were female?
Easy solution...don't ask the question.

Ah, time for a little friendly Marine bashing from our Navy brethren. I would just like to point out to our new friend that the Marine Corps is running a new ad campaign. Something to consider when making your decision.

First of all....it's not easier to get into the Marines. It may be, however, easier to get a slot to OCS...which I believe is what you meant to say. Getting a slot is the easy part. You will first have to complete 10-12 weeks of OCS and then once you commission, you will go to TBS for 6 months. Believe me, if you finish both of these...you will have earned it just like everyone else. As far as running with a pack that is half your weight, that's just wrong.............for girls, it's usually 95% of their weight :D

In all seriousness, that's actually a pretty good recruiting poster...

TBS is 6 months of infantry school. ALL Marine Officers are required to go through it after being commissioned. This is different from OCS, or "Bulldog", which all Marine Officers must go through before commissioning. I guess it could be described as "boot camp", but it's much more than that. If you're ROTC, I believe it's a 10-wk course between your junior and senior year. While not doing it myself (I'm Navy), I know it's very challenging (thus the "running with a pack that was half my weight" comment"), but most get through it.

SERE (Survival Evasion Resist & Escape) school usually takes place right after flight school and is only 2 weeks long (longer if you do something with a higher security clearance), of which only 1 wk is in the field.

I don't know about quotas for females, but I'm sure they exist. I've seen women get put in different airframes/locations just because they wanted to spread the female aviators around. The supposed quotas exist for the Navy too, however. Maybe less females apply for the Marines so they need more...

Regardless, I wouldn't worry about it in regards to you "not deserving it". Most things you get to do in the military are because they have a specific need and you qualify for it. There are plenty that could be aviators or fly the airframe they wanted but don't get it because there wasn't a need, or they didn't qualify in areas they couldn't control (eyesight, anthro measurements, etc. - in that regard, none of us "deserved" our spots, God gave them to us). If they have a need for women, take advantage of that, and be the best NAVAL OFFICER you can be.

Hope this helps.

Ya know, I just had to add something. this is my very first post here, BUT I did do a SERE school Bravo in Okinawa. There are 3 classes, Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. The one I did was tough, but very exciting, I was so hyped up to do it before it was time to. So, If you ever did have to go to a SERE school rest assured that it is not that bad. I loved repelling off of a cliff!!
