I am 27 1/2 years old now, born September 1980. I have been unsuccessful in seeking full time employment in the civilian world with an undergraduate degree in environmental science for almost 5 years now.
In February 2007 I started the application process to being a naval officer. After months and months of trying to find three references, my application package was not submitted until the November 2007 board. My choices were:
1. Aviation
2. Naval Flight Officer (NFO)
3. Intel
I was pro select for Aviation and Naval Flight Officer, rejected from Intel. I never received any sort of official notice so I just purely relied on my recruiter's word. My recruiter found it surprising because he has NEVER seen anyone over the age of 26 be selected.
However at MEPS physical examination I told the doctor I had asthma after the age of 12. Nowadays asthma does not affect my physical activity I was able to run the 1.5 mile in under 10:30. However having asthma is disqualifying for all military service and so I need an asthma waiver. My eyesight is also 20/FC and only correctable only to 20/25 with glasses.The technology at MEPS can NOT pick up my eyesight. I know from an optometrist that my diopter rating is about -7.00.
My recruiter says that the Navy will only consider me for an eye waiver after I get it. And even so I have to wait at least 90 days after my surgery to apply for the waiver. I figure I will not be able to be commissioned until at least age 28. He says that since I am pro select I am pretty much guaranteeded a slot. However I feel that the CNRC (Chief Naval Recruiting Command) will rescind my offer once they see someone who is 28 years old, with asthma and a legally blind eyesight. Why is my recruiter making me continue in the application process for the asthma waiver? Should I have my asthma waived what can I do to become a naval aviator, or even an NFO?
