New Lenovo Laptop

While it won't be good for gaming (it's got integrated graphics), just found a pretty good deal on a new Lenovo laptop. So good in fact, that we just ordered one for PSW. Lenovo Y-510 at Tiger Direct for $650 after mail-in rebate. It's got a Pentium Dual Core, 2 GB of RAM, 160 GB HD, Dual Layer DVD Burner, integrated webcam w/face recognition software (for access control), 15.4" screen, Dolby Home Theatre premium audio with 4 speakers and a subwoofer... We justified its purchase as it would be a perfect laptop for the boat. Pretty good price, too.

I have been very happy with my Lenovo. I use an X61 tablet. Small, light, and you can write on it too, which is pretty fuckin sweet.

Phrog, you realize that Lenovos are now owned and built by the Chinese. In short, you're ruining our country. Enjoy your hardware, comrade.

I've heard that the machines are actually pretty sturdy, like millerjd said.

I have been much happier with my Apple than any PC/Notebook product I have dealt with.

I'm typing this on a (badly cracked) macbook, whilst trying to miracle up $1800 for the Macbook Air.

Owned by the Chinese, but built by Americans (and Chinese). Their principal operations are in Beijing and Raleigh, NC. We drive 2 x Japanese cars, and 2 x American cars. I smoke Cubans when I can. I own Persian rugs. I accept responsibility for my actions. I appreciate quality. I am merely forcing Americans to rise up and improve the quality of their products... Of course, I will still probably prefer Japanese cars over American - because Japanese people are short like me, and I like the ergonomics. :)

The wife has an IBM branded ThinkPad (built by Lenovo), and it is ROCK solid. The only laptop that I've owned recently that comes close to it's build quality (PC wise) is the Acer I'm currently using. My HP sucked. My eMachines sucked. My Averatec was well built, too (it was a convertible tablet) - I only wish I hadn't spilled a soda on it...

I actually agree. Just joshin'. My MacBook Pro was actually shipped directly from China (and not Taiwan) and my car is not American but assembled by Americans.
I knew you were. Hence the reason for me detailing just how much I hate those lazy Americans ;)

When I buy a Japanese car, I do evaluate where it was designed/built... My Subaru, for example, was designed and built in Indiana. Makes me feel better if I'm providing American jobs, even if the ultimate dollar goes to Mainland Japan...

So does anyone have a decent recommendation for a deployment to an unfriendly mountainous country? A good balance between cost/reliability/performance would be nice. I'm in the market for one to take the place of my issued HP, which besides being a POS has been tapped for operational purposes (it's now on the SIPR roster).

We got my husband an HP tx1000z at the NEX for $900 (or $850...something like that) to use on the boat. He already has an Alienware gaming laptop but wanted something a little more portable.

I've used it and it seems to come with some nice features, the HD is a reasonable size (I think 160...), built in camera, etc. The sound is good while watching movies/listening to music and the touchscreen is kinda neat.

I have a Sony TX series notebook that works well for what I do. I travel a lot so it's easy to stick in my bag/purse (I know this probably isn't a concern for you...) and weighs only a couple lbs. It doesn't have as many features as the HP (no camera, no touchscreen, smaller HD) but I needed the ultra portable aspect of it.

Both laptops have taken a beating and still held up with no problems as far as mechanical or the operating system.

Man, I was comparing the prices of the laptops at the AAFES BX....fucking rip off man. The closest thing comparable to phrogs original post was going for 1400.

Not many people (that I've found) usually can compare with TigerDirect. I've bought from them since 1996, and have had nothing but good experiences with their customer service. They've also got a sale on HDTV going on right now, to include a Toshiba 40" (1080p) bundle with HD-DVD player, 9 HD-DVDs, and HDMI cable for $1300. The only thing you have to be careful with TigerDirect about is to read the description closely. If you are opposed to buying refurbished (I'm not), I'd say 40% of what TigerDirect sells is refurbished. They will clearly state it in the description though. Both of the deals I just posted aren't.
