NAMI whammy

I stared real hard and realized my beer was empty. Back to football, down with the BENGALS.:thumbdn_1

Had to fix that for you. The Pats are wicked pissa this year. Your flaming pussys (Ben-Gayls) just had to punt, and got a penalty to boot.

Yeah, been home a week and my accent has come back already...

I don't like the "Ben-Gayls" either. I'm a Bolts fan, but they need to get their act together also.

when exactly do you go through NAMI? is it anything like MEPS?
Soon after you report to NAS Pensacola. They put you in "A-Pool" - an exercise in dragging yourself to base every morning to show someone your ID proving that you didn't skip out on town and that you CAN get up early, all the while trying to avoid/get-the-best stash jobs, while waiting to class-up for API.

You should get scheduled for the NAMI/NOMI (never figured out the difference) physical, a PRT, and some other check-in stuff during A-Pool.

Oh wait, you might be asking about the pre-commissioning physical. Sorry. You get 2 completely different physicals done (pre-com. and one in P'cola after you're designated aviation). In that case, it depends on your commissioning source. All I know is ROTC, where they sent us spring of our junior year down to Jax. NOMI did it for us because we were doing 1st class aviation cruises. For others, MEPS might be sufficient, but I'm not sure. Just wanted to clarify, though.

I've had a few friends former SNA's and now SNFO's who got the whammy. All because of the eyes. Eyes and sinuses are the problems that I see people come across.

I am up for board consideration as an SNA. During my flight app they took xrays of my sinuses (the flight doctor said they weren't necessary for the application) and i had a slight buildup in one of my sinuses. Is this going to come back to haunt me when I get down to Pensacola if it hasn't cleared up by then?

Basically what can they disqualify you for concerning sinuses?

Known one to pass his vision test for flight physical, then get the whammy for eye dominance.

How does that disqualify you? I have left eye dominance, but I'm right handed. Would that be a disqualifier? Search didn't seem to point to that being the case.

Are you saying to use some eye-drops before the eye exam?

I'm no doctor (although I HAVE played doctor in the past) but I think the "drink plenty of water" thing is not just a lubrication issue. Your eye works better when you are hydrated. Has to do with the shape of the eyeball or some other medical magic.

I always drank a shit-ton (1.124 metric tonnes) of water the morning of my flight physical. One year, my urine was so clear, the corpsman accused me of trying to beat the piss test. I told him "I don't care if I fail the piss test, as long as my eye-test is good!"

I heard, in a different thread, that it helps to use reading glasses while reading (especially AW) to reduce eye strain, and another idea they said worked was wearing a light +prescription glasses walking around, so your eyes get some exercise trying to see distances. Supposedly it makes them super sharp when you take them off.

I can't confirm whether this works, but I'm going to try it between now and OCS.

Worked for me, but then again, I think I'm the one who posted it. I believe A4s posted it as well, saying it got him back to 20/20 too. Don't remember for sure though.

Close enough... :)
it also helps if you abstain from both smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol.

This sparked my interest. I have always heard about smoking having some temp. effect on vision. What is the story with chewing tobacco? Never been too clear on what physical effects dip has on someones body (besides the obvious oral problems). Thanks Doc.
