How is the ASTB scored?

I have heard that you recieve your ASTB scores in the form of 3 numbers, representing three parts of the test. My question is how are those numbers computed? If you get a 7 on the math part does that mean you got a 70% on math?

Thanks

No, a 7 does not mean 70%. The scores are based on a statistical distribution comparing everyone who takes the test. For instance, the OAR is scored from 20 to 80 with a 50 being the average of all who take the test. The majority of test takers (68%) will fall within one standard deviation of the mean. The other scores are out of 9 and are stanine scores. A stanine is just a standardized and scaled score based on the score distributions. The average for those scores is a 5 and most test takers (68%) fall within one standard deviation (a score of 3-7) of the average. As for how they compile the different sections into each score, I have no idea.

Edit: Found a good visual explanation of scores based off of a normal curve.

Thanks you both for your help... So this board that decieds who gets a flight contract looks at the ASTB, your PFT and your GPA? I am taking the test in June, before I will have a GPA, will this be a problem? Also what is a good (competitive) score?

Thanks again

anything above average perhaps. A lot of people on here have been scoring 7 or better with a 60 or better OAR. I'm taking my ASTB tomorrow, I'll let you know how it is.

Ok thanks, Good luck tomorrow.

Stupid question: what is the OAR?

Officer (or Overall, I can't remember which) Aptitude Rating. It's the score from 20-80 and is the more general ASTB that is used for not just pilot/MFO applicants, but everyone who applies for an officer program.

Is it comparable to the ASVAB? Are there study guides on this website?

I took the ASVAB back in high school and don't remember much of it, but I can say the ASTB is much more challenging. Try a search for ASTB gouge and you should find a ton of stuff on this site. Some of the better guides are the Marine gouge, the ARCO book and the Columbia website.

I'm still wondering if not having a college GPA will hurt me when I apply. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who have helped me out so far.

Your recruiter should be able to help you with that better than we can. Regardless, if you apply now and get turned down just keep improving your app and resubmitting. If it's something you really want just keep fighting and hope it all works out in the end.
