Honestly, those are pretty good questions.
To some, it’s a status symbol and may not actually be full of anything.
Maybe you’re using the fake box o’ Joe to smuggle things across the country….you never know with airline pilots these days….
Initial reports are he was the only one in tower controlling tower and ground traffic. And, he was coordinating the fire truck response. I can’t imagine what he’s going through right now.
Listening to the audio, you can hear it in his voice.
Cleared to land #2 happens at 5min, mishap at 7min.
But what does "normal" mean - within historical norms? Within procedural norms? Something else entirely? (This is mostly rhetorical...)
If you have been understaffed by X% every day for a year, and you were also understaffed by X% today, then I would say today's level was normal - but not optimal.
I don’t care if you are in a fire truck or aircraft, crossing an active runway without looking first is just plain stupid.
SWA 737 CA gets cold cocked by HUD when the HUD latching mechanism fails during the takeoff roll, resulting in severe concussion to the Captain (so severe he started vomiting, classic post concussion symptom).
FO calmly takes control , safely returns, lands and even taxis to gate without tiller.
