They still have formidable conventional capabilities as well, to include a variety of conventionally-armed missiles and platforms to launch them from long-range bombers to submarines (their newer ones are among the world's best). Even without going nuke they could still hit us whenever they wanted.
I know! I too am terrified. They've clearly been practicing to bomb Alaska for some time now. That's why I won't live there. Shame, too.. it's beautiful!

Jesus Christ. Is this level of overstatement really necessary?

Oddly enough (given the source), this is one of the more reasoned arguments I’ve seen that takes your side of the issue- not by not accusing the other side of fearmongering, but by pointing out the challenges to a path toward durable peace in the region:

I don't think the author of that article knows much about what he speaks.

Just curious, but given how they also had the "World's Second Most Powerful Army" with all manner of high-tech weapons and combat aircraft, up until they invaded Ukraine, what makes you think their newer submarines are any different? Their subs might on paper be great, just like their aircraft and tanks, but in practice, if their navy is anything like their army, then those high-tech subs are likely missing a whole lot of the actual components they are supposed to have and in terms of what they do have, they likely don't have the personnel trained to even really maintain and operate them.

And from what we've seen of their navy, well their flagship got sunk by the Ukrainians distracting it with a drone and firing some anti-ship missiles. That doesn't give the impression of a well-trained navy IMO. From what I've read, their conventional missile stocks also are running low as apparently they've been firing anti-ship and air-to-air missiles at ground targets in Ukraine.

Because we have regular interaction with their subs.

This is actually surprising to hear, because the conversations I have with my close bubblehead friends say the Russians produce shit products compared to modern American and European models.

Not sure if there is a large disparity between air and subsurface ASW capability driving that difference, but it is interesting none the less.

The attached article notwithstanding, the Russians have deployed some very capable platforms over the years. Not every AOR sees these platforms, hence your bubblehead friends experience with certain "products." But, the Russians do have some very good capability.

Why is it their sub capabilities are good yet their army and air force so bad?
