Enlisted then officer route

Hey all. I’m currently a college student about to graduate in December. I have a terrible GPA at 2.2 in information systems so I know I wouldn’t be accepted into OCS. I was talking to my officer recruiter and she brought up the idea of enlisting for 2 years, then applying for OCS. I wanted to get some input from the actual guys and girls in the military with experience to see if this was a solid plan, or if they’re just scamming me to get me to enlist. I’ve read multiple times that going enlisted then officer was very competitive and borderline impossible. Plus I wouldn’t want to accept a 4 year enlisted contract for me to not have a solid chance of commissioning.

Any tips, advice, or general discussions are greatly appreciated!

Go for it. Show the board you’re committed. Rise up from the deck plates and join the elite stable of United States Navy Mustangs.

Jk. Get some civilian job and keep applying to OCS until you get accepted or make your temporary job into a career. Also, uSe ThE sEaRcH fUnCtIoN.

Something you have to realize when joining is that ultimately the Navy owes you nothing. There's a chance you can go enlisted to officer, yes, but keep in mind that is in no way guaranteed. It is very competitive to go that route and you've gotta be the cream of the crop in your community. My recommendation to you is try to get a rate (UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ENLIST UNDESIGNATED) in your desired officer community and just bust your ass and hope for the best. And if it doesn't work out, then at least you served if that is one of your goals in general which is always a very honorable thing. But I'm not gonna bullshit you here, retention and recruitment is in rough shape and recruiters have been know to dangle "enlisted to officer" pathways in college graduates faces in an attempt to convince them to enlist. Best of luck to you man.

Like what others have said and what I have said in your previous post (that you deleted), use the search function to see where applicants stack up. Additionally, look at the enlisted stats to see where you line up.

If you enlist, do so knowing it may end up being your career. You still have a low GPA and quite frankly the best way to fix that is to boost it with additional courses and/or pursue a masters. Just food for thought.

I am going to give some info you probably don't want to hear, the recruiter is trying to get you to enlist to meet a quota, there is nothing that 2 years of enlisting will do to make you any better of a candidate than you are right now.

The other info you probably don't want to hear is that you do not meet the minimum qualifications for nearly all designators, the one that doesn't list a minimum is aviation, but even then you would have to ace the ASTB and hope they overlook the low GPA, I haven't seen that low of a GPA picked up in the past several years but it could happen.

The "lowest" GPA I've seen is a 2.47 GPA, it was a female who posted on here a few years back. She aced the ASTB, I have yet to see anyone below that get selected.

To the OP, if you want to get serious looks by a recruiter - best options are either to take additional courses or pursue a masters degree. The latter method is probably the "easiest" / quickest.

Thank you for your insight. I’ll be realistic and just give up on that passion. I messed up and well, I have to suffer the consequences of my actions. I appreciate your information! It’s definitely better to hear the truth than sugar coating it like my recruiter. Thank you once again.

Could I look into doing rotc while pursing my masters? Then when I graduate my masters try for OCS?

This is a terrible idea for a number of reasons.

Funny enough I got in contact with a Marine officer and meet the gpa requirements. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad lmao. I’m going to explore that option too
