Pre-API (ROM, Wait Time, Report Date, Etc.)

Hey all!

Just curious how the situation is down there in Pensacola pre-API. Is there still a ROM period? How long did they give you to report (I was hearing about 6-7 days but guess it could depend on your location)? Is there a long waiting period, or they having you do online classes for now? Thank you!

You'll have the most accurate answer either by asking in JOPA, or by calling the duty office. Its manned by bored ensigns who can give the most accurate and up to date information.

Your best bet is to get in touch with people you know down there already, or if you don't I'm sure someone on AW will reach out. I would call NASC/Flight Management only as a last resort, as all it takes is one disgruntled person answering the phone and then you're "that dude".

Also, besides when and where to report and what uniform to wear (all of which should be in your orders) any other info is gravy and you'll quickly be brought up to speed by the Ensign/2ndLt rumor mill when you actually get down there.

And that is why you use the name of someone you despise when making phone calls like this. :D

Current A-Pooler here. ROM is two weeks that starts when you check in (via phone call to Flight Management). Give them a call in between your NET and NLT range on your orders. You have two weeks where they don't bother you outside of having to virtually muster between 0700-0730. Then you check in for real. After that, you are in the watch pool and you will knock out urinalysis, a check in brief, anthros, NAMI, flight suit/gear fitting, and the APIT. Those all seem to come in a mixed order, but I think the APIT is the last event for everyone. The chip trail is currently not in use. The current APIT is push-ups (have to get 47 for males) a 10 minute break, and the 1.5 mile run on the track in 12:15 or less. Sit-ups are not being done due to face-to-face proximity and official plank guidance hasn't been released. All of this takes roughly two months to complete. Then you class up for Water Survival which is a week. After that, the wait time seems hazy. My buddy has a projected start for NIFE (Academics) around Christmas so that's ~4 months from check in for him. I have another buddy that finished Water Survival months ago, but is still waiting for a NIFE class. So, it varies.

For classes, the gouge is that the classes are being held via Microsoft Teams, but you take the tests in-person.

TL, DR: ROM is two weeks for all. It's taking ~2 months to class up for Water Survival and the wait time for Academics is a moving target. As with all of this, YMMV.

I was drafted into working in flight management for some time (so I guess that makes me the enemy), I can promise you we don't remember much of anything or anyone unless you shits jacked up, because Mr. Billy will be yelling at you. I would not get on his bad side. You'd be surprised with the level of stupid that walked in that door from new check ins. I'm talking summer whites in late november, and SDBs without a tie.

No chip trail?!? Thank goodness, that thing was a weird anachronism of flight school.
“This is supposed to simulate the forest floor after you’ve ejected from your aircraft.” Yeah, OK, Petty Officer Fucknuts.

Even when I was an Ensign, I still wasn’t that stupid.

Back in the day.... to start aviation training there were separate, stricter height/weight requirements than the rest of the Navy plus a harder PT test that include push ups, sit ups, pull ups, obstacle course and 2 mile cross country course. We did it the first day or two of AOCS and everyone else did it the first day or two of API. A bunch or ROTC and Academy guys were surprised as they were never told. One shot or you were out.

We had a dude walk in late to the uniform brief with no shoelaces on his boots, hair frazzled, sweating, in a flight suit that didn’t fit.
