Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where I should live that is close to North Island. Prices seem to be extremely high

The short answer: no where.

No matter what, it's going to expensive. I lived up in Mission Valley, which was an easy commute down 15 to NI. A good friend of mine who was also has a wife and kid, and was an O-1, lived up near Miramar. The rent is a bit less up there, just because it's farther from downtown. Another guy I went throught the RAG w/ rented a house in Old Town. Basically, it's what you can come up w/. I'd recommend going to Apt. Hunters over in Mission Valley (by the Hooters) and grabbing the weekly tabloid paper thing that comes out, as that has lots of real estate in the back, but they go quick. Hope that helps.

I live in Vista (north county) which is too far for you to drive I am sure, but either way, I used a property management company American Heritage. They are decent people, I guess as much as you can expect for a rental company. Their website is http://www.americanheritageproperties.com/

They got me a 3/2 house on a golf course for $1400, so they have some reasonable rates. Hope that helps

Yeah, that's where my married friend lived. Pretty much wherever you chose, expect ants as roommates.

Check www.sdreader.com and look under their classifieds section.

These links might help you familiarize yourself with the location of different areas...

There are some affordable places on Coronado as well (believe it or not). If you get a copy of the Coronado Eagle there is a rental hot sheet in the back that lists all the properties for sale or available to rent for that week. The Eagle comes out on Wednesdays.

I lived in Imperial Beach when I was there. Not that impressive if you like going out drinking a lot, but the drive to NASNI wasn't bad, either up the strand or up 5, and OLF IB was right around the corner, with a commissary, exchange, and gas station. Of course, our 1BR apartment cost almost as much as the mortgage on my 3BR house in Milton, but that's the case anywhere out there.

Depending on how far you want to drive in the morning....La Mesa, (parts of) Lemon Grove and Spring Valley are also options. It's a straight shot down Hwy 94 to the I-5 South for an exit (or two)...maybe about 12-15 miles, if that. It's a bit cheaper to live out there and not too bad. My sister and bro-in-law (dual military w/ kids at the time) lived okay out there.

You can also look into base housing...

Good luck!
