I'm dated and I realize it. But back in my day, the number of guys wanting P-3s and jets was about the same. Helos weren't really sought after.

Interestingly, that was not the case during my period at the TRACOM. As with everything else, I think it cycled, but P-3s weren't sought after. I think part of that may have been the glut of P-3 IPs we had at the time (there were almost no Navy helo IPs wing-wide at KNSE and even fewer Navy jet guys) and the dissatisfaction with their community at the time. From what I recall from reading here, P-3s started to swing back into favor after I left.

At least among those of us currently training, helos are more popular than P-3/P-8. Hell, I'd say there are just as many people in Milton (me included) who want helos as those who want jets.

My sell-by-date is quickly approaching, but figured I'd offer the info. The desire for P-3s was definitely different as an IP than it was when webmaster and I went through Primary as studs.

All of them.

I've been told that (unprompted) dozens of times on deployment.
Yeah, but your sample size is small, I would argue almost all Marines... When I was in South Field, I would argue that probably 60-75% of the guys I went through Whiting with (that were Marines) actually wanted helos. My selection card was "1. Helos, 2. Helos, 3. Helos" another buddy put down "1. Space Shuttle, 2. SR-71, 3. Helos". Navy guys? That's another story, I would say >50% wanted jets and generally moped around South Field until FAM-1.

I won't lie, I wanted jets until about FAM-3 in Primary. Then I started seriously thinking about my future, and I knew that I wanted to deploy with a MEU (what the hell was I thinking?!?). I also realized that I had a 50-50 chance of getting Harriers, and even then I could attempt to taxi with my nozzles full forward (or whatever the hell my arrogant-ass roommate did to land him in the 02 world) and realized that flying helos was where I wanted to be.

Helos were definitely more sought after than P-3s while I was in Primary. I think the whole "airline gig" has sort of lost it's charm in recent years so not as many studs are going for the multi-rating and whatnot. Not to mention that the community has a bad rep amongst studs.
