Is there anyone who has been to Hawaii and knows what happens to our beloved pets?

Renee,

I'd post this question at www.military.com. There are a lot of people over there, so I'm sure there are some who've been to Hawaii.

Also take a look at: http://www.hawaii.navy.mil

Good luck!

Renee - I read an article on Yahoo last week saying that Hawaii had shortened the quarantine time from 30 days to 5 days. Here's a link to one of the articles.

I'm in Hawai'i now, and there has just been some major overhauls to the quarantine regulations. It can still be up to six months, or it can be as short as one week. Alot has to do with the type of animal, where it is coming from, and how up to date all the animal's shots are. My advice is to consult the State of Hawai'i website and get your animals innoculated.

Pour over and following some links on the following site:

http://www.hawaiiag.org/hdoa/

Importation of dogs, cats and other carnivores into Hawaii is governed by Chapter 4-29 of the State of Hawaii, Department of Agriculture Administrative Rules. This law says that these animals are required to complete a 120-day confinement in the State Animal Quarantine Station. If specific pre-arrival and post-arrival requirements are met, animals may qualify for a 30-day quarantine or a new 5-day-or-less quarantine that becomes effective on June 30, 2003.

The law is still 120 days unless you meet the conditions for 30 day or 5 day quarantine.

Renee,

Second tour in HI, and have gone through the quarantine thing. As previously stated, the time was dropped to 5 days, but you need to meet the requirements. Go through that checklist, and plan ahead. Two other things:

1) Quarantine is reimbursable on your travel claim. I forget the exact amount, but it coverd almost all of the 30 day quarantine on my dog.
2) Airlines have block out dates where the temp is too high and they wont transport animals. Call around and investigate.

I'll see if I can get my wife to post on this topic, she handled it all, and knows more about it than I do. Such as specific info on the airlines, etc.. Also, the quarantine is not as bad as I feared, the caretakers took excellent care of my dog, but part of that may have been that we visited our dog every day, except (mondays?) when they did their work and no visitors allowed. I also think I have a pic of the kennels...
