how does the navy select which aircraft you will pilot? is it a choice thing, or based on initial flight classes?

you get to make a choice. Based on your grades and the needs of the navy (that is really the biggest thing) you will select out of primary.... Helos, Maritime or jets.

You have no way of knowing what you are going to fly until after you are done with primary.
