MV-22 Not Guilty
The Marines have determined that there was nothing mechanically wrong with the Osprey that crashed April 8, killing 19 troops. The Pentagon said that the aircraft in question was in vertical mode, and that it lost lift under its right rotor, tipping and dropping to the ground, where it burst into flames. There is speculation that the Osprey may have settled with power, that is, it may have flown into its own rotor/prop-wash, spinning its rotor in downward-bound air. The Marines are looking at modifying training or, as a last resort, changing the aircraft.
This determination means the four other Ospreys might be back in the air within days. It also means that the Marines and other investigators will be investigating the human factors involved, which included flying in darkness, with both pilots wearing night-vision gear.
