Marine Huey's

Can someone tell me a little bit about this community and what their general mission is? You never hear a whole lot about them and i've only seen a handfull of them flying around my whole life. I know that there is a unit stationed out in san diego but is it difficult to land that job? I'm just trying to get an idea of what kind of competetion one would face if selecting this airframe.

Thanks.

The only thing I know about Huey's is they fly in composite squadrons, if you will, with Cobra's. I think each HMLA squadron contains 18 Cobra's and 10 Hueys per squadron. So there's more than just Huey's in San Diego. Not sure if this is entirely correct but I think HMLA squadrons are located at Pendleton, New River, Yuma, and Okinawa. Skidkid or another snake driver can clarify that.

Active Duty HMLA squadrons are located in Pendleton and New River.

Yuma has 3 Hueys for station search and rescue.

As far as I know, San Diego does not have any Hueys. I believe Miramar's station SAR is comprised of 46's.

Hueys are utility aircraft, missions are things like SAR, CSAR, CASEVAC, Gun runs, Escort missions, VIP, Resupply, etc..., etc....

I'm not sure how they have been most utilized in Iraq/Afghanistan, so I'm not sure how that all plays out in the real world.

I think I read somewhere the RAG for Huey's is at Camp Pendleton, maybe that's what I was thinking.

Correct, the RAG for that TMS, as well as AH-1W is at HMT-303 located in Camp Pendleton.

There are HMLA's: -167, -169, -267, -269, -367, -369

HMLA-167 and HMLA-269 are located in New River, the others are located in Camp Pendleton.

The west coast squadrons are on a regular 6-month UDP schedule in Okinawa - during peacetime that is.

Edit: BTW, those are actually HH-1N Hueys, not the UH-1N's found at HMLA squadrons. There are many differences. The avionics package is quite old and not at all comparable to a UH-1N. Also you will notice a "stabilizer bar" which is perpendicular to the rotor blades, that system has been phased out in favor of a better computer controlled one. Among many other things. Also, the interior has been gutted to make these birds lighter for SAR purposes.
