I'm taking my Navy Phsyical on Thursday. Two years ago my left eye was 20/60, and chances are, it will have gotten worse in two years. So my question is, when I go to the physical (it's a flight-pilot physical), what is going to happen when I get to my eye exam? Will I fail the physical? Will I be able to opt in for PRK surgery? How do I get a waiver, and what exactly is it good for? I'm applying for Marine PLC for next summer. I just took my ASTB, did fine on it, still have to take my PFT, if any of this info helps.

For you guys and gals who've had PRK, what was your eyesight before? I think I'd be a good candidate, but I'm not sure if 20/60 is bad enough to get surgery. I've looked online for information, but they've all ultimately said consult an eye care specialist, so instead of doing that, I figured I would ask some people who've had it. :icon_smil

Well, for starters, you need 20/40 to go to flight school as SNA. I think you should take the hour or so to have a free consultation with an eye doctor.

My vision was 20/200 before, 20/15+ now. Definitely go see a doc rather than asking us, though. What have you got to lose? Just because I had the surgery doesn't make me a PRK expert. One thing that rings a bell, though, is that you're claiming your eyes will be getting worse. My doc told me that refraction had to be stable for at least a year before surgery.

Yeah Neo!!!! Go NOLES!

I was more interested in the how the Navy handles bad eyesight. Specifically what I have to before and after my physical. If anyone has any good information on that I'd love to hear it.

I'm definitely going to see a doctor, I just wanted to know if anyone had similar eyesight to me, and NC did, which answers that question. I guess I was just looking for some kind of confirmation.

I was unmeasurable on my doctors chart. My contacts were -4.75 diopters and now I am 20/10. There is a wealth of info on the web about what the stipulations are for a waiverable PRK surgery. I did it over a year ago and couldn't tell you what websites to go to. My surgery has been waivered. Definitely talk to a Opthamolagist before doing a bunch of research to see if you are a good candidate for the surgery.

With you having a flight physical for PLC, that would be a great time to ask the eye doctor that you will see at the physical for the information that would allow you to continue with an aviation package. I had 20/200 in one eye and 20/400 in the other, had the surgery in March 2001...vision is 20/15. You can get some good info from an OSO, but I would also listen to the Navy Doc that you'll see. They will give you the 'no S*!t' answer to what you have to do to still qualify for the flight program.

Good Luck, stay motivated!

So is it mandatory to get eye surgery if you wish to become a pilot for the Marines? My vision is about 20/60 or 20/80. thanks

I've heard of a couple guys using the See Clearly Method and having pretty good results. You can get it for about $100 on Ebay. Much less expensive and less invasive.
