"On the return flight, Risner’s wingman was hit and leaking fuel. To help him reach friendly territory, Risner inserted the nose of his aircraft into the tail of his wingman’s plane and pushed him out over the East China Sea."

Wow - what a Patriot and an amazing career.

RIP sir . . . . . . .

WWII, Korea and Vietnam Fighter pilot and POW, passed away on OCT 22.
Another unfortunate circumstance concerning B/Gen Risner's treatment as a POW, was that he was featured in a 27 April 1965 Time magazine cover story, some 5 months before he was shot down. His captors soon became aware of this. Undoubtedly, they singled him out for extra harsh treatment. 1965 was the first full year of the air war up north, and Risner became the senior POW at that time.

I remember seeing the cover, and reading the story at that time. His F-105 "Iron Hand" was downed on 16 September 1965, about 3 months prior to our deployment on RANGER.
RIP General Risner
