I've never been to Arlington, but I've been to many of our cemeteries in Europe -- Anzio and Epinal, to name a couple. In Epinal they rubbed sand into my great uncle's headstone so the letters would stand out. Comparing the two photos above, @wink's photo looks like they were all rubbed (or painted in?) but @jmcquate's looks like what I saw overseas: no filling, just engraved. Why do the two photos look different?

At Normandy MoH recipients are in Gold. It seems to be up to the cemetary whether black inlaid or not. At Arlington the style has changed. Notice the marker behind my father in law is filled in black. My father in law's stone is outlined. I hear Arlington is going to plain engraving. No inlaid color.
