When should you get PRK?

I was wondering when the best time would be to get PRK? I know their are two options. I don't know the difference between the USAFA and the USNA is. Is it a better idea to get PRK before you enterer the academy and try to get a waiver? Also I saw somewhere you could get PRK while at the academy but very few are allowed. I know it is disqualifying to have had corrective eye surgery but is it better to try and get a waiver? What would be my best chances?

Thanks

If you get into USNA, you can get it there (unless that's changed). During your pre-commissioning physical 2/c (junior) year, they'll ask you if you want to be considered for PRK. If you say yes, they'll use your eye exam results to determine a preliminary eligibility for PRK. If you meet the initial requirements, you'll get an email to schedule an additional screening. Once that's done and the docs at Bethesda determine if you're eligible or not, you'll get the actual procedure scheduled. You'll do your first couple of post-op exams at Bethesda and the rest at USNA. And the best part... the Navy pays for it all.

Basically, if you go to USNA, I'd say wait... but definitely make sure they are still offering PRK. Last I heard, they were reviewing the policy and maybe changing it.

I think USAFA has a similar program.

And unless its changed, mostly everyone that wanted it got it... unless they were medically unable.

You'll be able to fly providing you meet the requirements for the aviation waiver following the surgery. There are plenty of winged aviators and students that have had corrective eye surgery, myself included.
