Hi all, I was wondering what the dress code is for the OCS graduation ceremony. Is it a dress for women, or slacks? Suit and tie for the men, or sport coat w/jeans etc. Help me out, less than a month to go!

i don't think there really is a dress code for guests... but i've seen anything from nice-casual to suit and tie.

I just saw a graduation last Friday. Most of the older men where wearing a suit and tie, the younger men where where casual clothes and ladies where all wearing church-like clothes.

You should really take the weather into consideration... it's almost October here and the highs are still in the 90's.

Good luck,

Bumaintman-

When my husband graduated back in May I wore casual khaki capri pants (about 4" above the ankle) and a nice dress shirt- and I can tell you- I felt WAY underdressed. Most of the women were wearing nice 'church-dress' dresses often with heels- and the men where either in a suit or wearing nice dress pants, a casual shirt with a jacket. It was hot in May as well-but the ceremony is at 8 or 9 am (I think) and you are out of the sun by 11am at latest. I agree with the above- take the weather into consideration- but if you have a short sleeve shirt and nice jacket- then I'd wear the jacket until you were too hot- or at least for pictures and then carry it around. Check out the weather first- and just plan! But I can tell you- I felt horrible to be so underdressed. Lesson learned!

Graduates wear medals. See my post on the 03-04 class thread in response to "what to wear"

Have a great time.

Parents, dress casual. Hawaian shirts and tennies are fine. The order of the day for Navy OCS is that first your son or daughter with pass and review on the parade grounds, so you will be walking in the grass, just like a Officer and a Gentleman. Then, he/she will be commisioned in the base chapel. By now you will undoubtedly think its over, not yet this is the government, so he/she will get in line to render his/her first salute under the flag pole and give the token silver dollar. Phew is it over, not if their an aviation candidate, your son or daughter will proceed with orders in hand across the street to be checked in to API (Aviation Preflight Indoctrination). Its over, a long drawn out day for the sake of your son or daughter. Is it worth it? That's affirmative! So in the end dress light if its hot. By all means take pictures of all your family and get the DI involved. Don't be shy, this is your families day to be honored, you for raising someone with the fortitude to endure the last thirteen weeks and theirs for wearing that spiffy new uniform.

I've heard that unless you're wearing a tuxedo or a ball gown, it's impossible to be overdressed. Some people go more casual than others... there's no guest dress code. Definitely listen to these people and pay attention to the weather though! Wearing something too fancy in high temperatures will be a disaster! Remember that the officer you're watching graduate will look pretty spiffy in their officer dress uniform... so make sure what you're wearing will look nice next to them in the pictures. :)

Another point that might help your decision is the parade in the morning, which starts around 7:30. The grass is usually a little wet, which will only matter if you go to take pictures of the graduates on the parade field. When my husband graduated in July, I and most people wore a sundress or nice slacks/capris. Personally, I would stay away from jeans and shorts, but mostly anything else goes.
Have fun!
