I was wondering aloud the same thing when a coworker mentioned that some might be National Guard types, not sure if the rules are the same for them if not 'federalized' at the time.

Might be a gray area legally, not so much in the professional sense.

Does anyone else here remember "The Great Imposter" ? There was a movie made around his character and it starred Tony Curtis? The characters real name was Freddie DeMara (unless he was lying to us too?!!) and I had the opportunity to sit down with him years ago (80's) and chat informally. The guy was incredible in both his intelligence and ability to blend in. He claimed to speak many languages and I could confirm he was good in at least three that I knew. A surgeon friend of mine said that Freddie could probably do a number of surgeries better than many board certified people and that was based on personal observation. He was a delightful guy to chat with in the last years of his life.
I suppose it is a good area of study for psychologists and the only heartburn I have is when someone does it for personal gain at the expense of others. For someone to bullshit is one thing..... to use that to reach for your wallet is another. To defame those who have actually "been there, done that" is another issue and I suppose that is what many of us have issues with. Diluting the actual accomplishments that earned awards, medals, recognition, etc. It kind of reminds me of when Aldrin cold cocked the reporter who was too persistent in calling him a liar and fake? At some point it boils over and the warrior clan has little tolerance for it.

So we've got a purported MGySgt with at least 28 years distinguished service and 12 (or 13, can't tell) rows of ribbons, seal trident, basic EOD badge, possibly aviator wings under the epaulet, and a green aiguillette (which as I understand it from 5 mins of research means he's either a low level USAF student airman at a technical training center or it was awarded by the French/Belgian government for his service during WWI or WWII).

    Unbelievable...

Why do so many folks think it's OK to slap a Trident on your uniform and call yourself a " SEAL?" Unbelievable !!!

Same rules as active duty if you are wearing your uniform.

A Florida Guard soldier did it 2 years ago.

I am not sure why people have to lie about their service. I ran into another former Naval Aviator in the Army who lied about the community he was previously in. For instance, why would an HS guy lie and say he flew HSL, yet provide clearly incorrect information about the squadrons he was in, the bases he was stationed at and the ships he flew off of. He couldn't name the type of radar the 60B had or explain how the RAST worked, but his answers were fairly consistant with the HS community. I later found out he never made HAC, and that was why he left the Navy.

At first it may seem harmless, but this sort of thing affects us all. Imagine trying to get a job based on your REAL military experience, only to find someone who is a poser has already paved-the-way at your prospective company. Instead of finding a favorable or even neutral environment, you find yourself fighting just to get a fair shake. My peers, who respect me quite a bit now, admitted to me a couple of years later that I was "suspect" when joining the guard because of this previous Navy guy.

If I'm not mistaken, that "aiguillette" is actually referred to as a "fourragere." All members of 5th Marine Division are allowed to wear it while a member of the Division. One of the DIs while you and I were at OCS wore one on his Alphas. Some supporting information: http://www.i-mef.usmc.mil/external/1stmardiv/5thmarregt/history/history_fourragere.jsp

Besides that, the d-bag pictured deserves to be mocked publicly, stripped of all of his insignia, and then frogmarched down main street in the town he lives in. Disgraceful.

You're getting close... The French Fourragere was awarded to the 5th & 6th Marine Regiments (there is no 5th Marine Division) in 1918 for the Battle of Belleau Wood. Members of the 5th or 6th Marines wear it to this day (only while they are attached to the regiment though).

That gets me as well, I moved into a place and was talking to my neighbor who said he was in submarines but out due to medical, but when I asked him which one he said he didn't remember! Who that has served honorably forgets what ship they have served on? I will give a pass to very old vets with memory issues.

Incarcerate that fat boy phony under the Stolen Valor act. Then let the 'Bubbas' give him the big time 'indoc' as appropriate.

[This shit is an epidemic. I get almost a daily report from the POW Network of some other asshole trying to steal the real men's and women's valor who have BTDT. It has gotta stop!]

Yeah I don't think so either. Gugle was apparently a real gunnery sergeant. A scumbag, sure, but a scumbag who should know his shit better than the guy with a SEAL trident and aviator wings.
