Thanks, I knew Prowlers were a little bigger I just wasn't sure what effect that had on tailhook design, though I guess it's entirely logical that as the jet grows the hook grows.

(You could also edit out the Wikipedia hyperlinks above so it looks like you typed all that from pure memory :D)

I would, but my last Prowler flight was about 6 years ago (2012) right before I retired, and all the detailed info is starting to fade from my memory.

Something about chasing simulated terrorist speedboats near the NUC with a really, really talented and good-looking ECMO in the front right seat. :D

But this evidently didn't help. Some sources stated that Prowler as a type scored the max number of bolters per 100 sorties, just due to its hook's kinda bad habit to bounce off the deck thus skipping the wires, and V-div people used to put the packs of toilet papers under the wires just before the Prowler's landing. Evidently something was wrong with hydraulic system or the spring that's keeping the hook down. Strangely that, reportedly, this issue hadn't been resolved for years.

Think about putting rolls of toilet paper in the landing area.........why would we have even done FOD walks if that were a thing? Might as well chuck a few tools out there too, since it doesn't matter :)

Whole lot of bravado and bullshit in that article. While they did do a bunch of crazy/stupid shit back in the day, I’ve never heard of anyone doing that. Color me skeptical.

Mr. Rubel had evidently never been at the controls of Prowler, but he had undoubtedly land Prowlers being LSO. You were ECMO in Prowlers, but evidently saw LSO's work not closer than from Vultures' Row, I think. To whom should I believe?

Interestingly-

You bet:D
Being the Dean of USNWC, Capt Rubel was offrec sticking with quite low opinion about F-14 crowd. Right, light attack vs AW fighters. Now he advocates Tomcat-like state-of-the-art development. This officer and gentleman is able to change his mind. My respect, by the way.

Proximity to the platform doesn’t change the believability of the story. Stuff like that would have made it into the community lore. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just very unlikely.

Thanks Brett. I'm not saying I don't believe you, I just think that the NATOPS safety standards became higher now than it has been before and if you have never seen something like that during your Prowler tenure, it's understandable enough. When Robert Rubel was landing Corsairs on the decks as pilot and LSO the mishaps record was, supposedly, several times thicker than now.

"Barney" Rubel was a senior in college and I was a freshman when we were getting our private pilot's licenses under the same instructor. When I showed up as an FRP at VA-174, he was an instructor there.
