Waiting for Medical Clearance

Hey Everyone,

I got PRK surgery on August 1st 2014 to better my eyesight and chances of obtaining a Naval Flight Slot. I am taking the ASTB soon and I strongly believe I will do well. However, because of the surgery I cannot go to MEPS until February 1st (6 months after PRK). My question is will I be able to go in front of a selection board prior to going to MEPS?

Not anymore. I can't find the exact post, but I believe Rufio recently posted about this. New SNA/SNFO applications have to have MEPS completed before they can be submitted to help avoid giving someone a Pro-Y only for them to later be medically disqualified. Take this with a grain of salt; I didn't read things too carefully, but I believe this is how things are working now.

Yeah I asked NavyOffRec and he said the same thing, you must go to MEPS and have a PQ letter from N3M before you can be seen by the Board.

Ok.

Is it possible to go to MEPS to get everything checked out, and return at a later date to determine all is well after a surgery?

This next question may be vague, but what are the major medical issues that disqualify people to become aviators?

I am 71" tall, 185 lbs, and I now have 20/20 vision. I would say that I am a relatively healthy person and I workout regularly.

You're right, that's pretty vague, and my answer is the same. Just from what I've seen since I've lurked around this site and with talking to others, eyesight is one of the big ones. Beyond that, mental issues, blood issues, and other automatic disqualifiers that are generally outside of someone's control seem to be the big things. Just based on the very limited information you provided, I think you'll be fine. Height and weight match up with just about every aviation platform, eyesight is fine (but you'll have to wait another 3 months to confirm that), and being in good shape is always a plus.
