VTU Gouge

I joined the VTU from SELRES back on January 1st. Relatively painless. Worked out a deal with my VTU CO and SELRES unit to telework with my previous unit (the type of work we do makes it very easy to do so). I show up once a year for the readiness review, and do my semi-annual PRTs at a local NOSC.

One of the reasons I didn't join the local NOSC was they were far more strict about showing up for monthly drills, and wouldnt allow telework to make up for any missed ones. I may actually transfer to my local VTU anyway, since in some ways, just showing up one weekend a month and doing whatever meaningless work is a bit easier than hunting for useful telework.

All and all, I've made it work for me, but my VTU and NOSC leadership has been very supportive of my career needs. Networks and relationships really matter.

Any recommendations for your detachment FITREP when you went from SELRES to VTU? Something line, "HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION FOR RE-AFFILIATION WITH SELRES"

Seriously, was there any special language in your last FITREP in SELRES when you detached and went to the VTU?

Nothing special- just say the standard good things about what you did with emphasis on anything leadership-related. If the FITREP is off the regular cycle then you can say it's because you're detaching to transfer to the VTU (just as you'd explain any 1/1 report using one line or less).

Your thought about strong language recommending future re-affiliation in a pay billet is a good idea. It probably won't matter, but it won't hurt, and maybe it will make a small difference to the APPLY board down the road. Plenty of SELRES temporarily drop down to VTU (and IRR) with the intention of coming back in a few years when the have more time in their lives (job/family/etc.). So by putting that there you're documenting your intent to do that and demonstrating a consistent pattern in your interest in continued service.
