Looks like the president had to have a note card reminding him to empathize with the shooting victims he met with recently. Color me shocked...

This shits still going on in here? From your post I would have thought his note card said, "#5. Pretend that I give a damn"

It's a talking point dude. A reminder to talk about how their fears and concerns are not falling on deaf ears. Oh, and by the way, he didn't even reference that note card, nor did he use a TelePrompTer throughout the event. Give it a rest.

Meh. He isn't the first bigwig to do that, and he won't be the last. Hell, I use written notecards to address my department on a regular basis. This is just the press feigning indignation to get ratings. I'm no fan of Trumps, but dude- come back when you actually have a story about something.

It may decrease the risk of war; Trump seems to be relatively mellow towards world leaders he has met in person (like Xi).
Or it may increase it in the long term if the President makes = concessions to the North Koreans, the North Koreans have never been 'honest actors' and I see no indication that'll change anytime soon.

SK seems to be onboard with it and they have a lot more to lose than we do. At this point it's probably too late to denuclearize North Korea by force without significant civilian casualties on both sides. It seems to me that the administration is handling this in a relatively 'liberal' fashion, running it by Japan and SK rather than just making abrupt and sudden radical changes unilaterally. So that at least is a positive. Realistically I don't see how this is ever resolved without making some sort of concessions on some level, unfortunately. I think you're absolutely right to be skeptical, but on the other hand I don't see a better alternative.

It's probably too late to 'denuclearize' NK, period. North Korea has played, provoked and attacked us and its neighbors for years, 60+ years of history ain't going to change overnight. And to be frank I fear what the President would put on the table and agree to in a one on one with 'lil Kim.

Trump doesn't seem to realize that both Kims have been asking to meet a US president for 20 years now.

No one else was dumb enough to take it up without conditions. It legitimizes Kim, treating him as an equal and rewarding bad behavior.

The offer was walked back for a reason.

All accounts show Trump's offer to be impulsive and not staffed properly. Yet another example of his incompetence.

OBTW, firing your SecState by Tweet? What kind of shit leadership is that? If a lieutenant fired a LCpl fire team leader by email his ass would be gone by the end of the day, yet leadership by Tweet is acceptable from POTUS? That's some bullshit, right there. The President doesn't have a phone? What. A. Pussy.

Trumpers, explain that to me.

But...
Pretty sure he had a convo with SecState (Ret) Tillerson via phone from AF1, according to reports.
The writing has been on the wall for awhile for him. How AG Sessions is still employed though, I don’t know.
And not sure what conditions you want NK to meet...when the previous admin was trying to talk to him and selling out to Iran their argument was “Well NOT talking to them hasn’t worked...”
Not many options left with NK...Option A:Starve into submission...
Hasn’t worked (thanks China) but is getting worse for them.
Option B: Bomb into the Stone Age...untenable.
Option C: Negotiations to deescelate. It was a pretty big deal when Nixon went to China, and also when we finally talked with the Soviet Union...

Not sure what your solution is...mine is a combination of A and C with the threat of B...
Something about tweet softly and carry a large nuke button...

Guessing all that DIME model shit we learned about works...

All the administration tales of a phone call have been pretty well proven false. The State Dept and Tillerson himself have said as much. Trump can’t lead his own staff, much less a country.

It’s a tough situation, no doubt, but what DOESN’T work diplomatically is chaos. Threatening “fire and fury” then accepting top level negotiations with no preconditions and then backing off a day later is the opposite of basic competence, much less master diplomacy.

The President boarded Air Force One after he tweeted that Secretary Tillerson was fired, and Tillerson is still Secretary of State until 31 March. Director Pompeo's confirmation isn't a sure thing either, Senator Paul has already come out in opposition to his nomination.
