Just wondering how many of you guys play golf and are bringing your clubs. I might drive if I am able to buy a decent car to drive from Oklahoma. I am currently in Washington and I am planning on moving my pregnant wife and three daughters before I report up there but I don't know if it would be worth it with all the other guys taking their cars. I just have to attend NSI in Feb and we want to move because if we don't move before NSI and get my wife checked in to a new OB the Navy will not let her move past May 9th. I am hoping everything goes smoothly and we get to move into Tinker AFB housing before I have to report. Any of you guys know how the perdiem went once you left your command to move home? Or did any of you move before BOOST/NSI or did you just move after? Thanks for the help.

If you are going to NSI for the Feb class, I don't know if golf would be the best option. It is bitter cold and the winds are pretty brutal until april-may. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Well sounds like no golf for me because I can handle the cold from being up here in Whidbey, but I f'n hate the wind because I already suck but if it is crazy cold then I don't want to look like that kid on "A Christmas Story" all bundled up and not be able to swing a golf club correctly (like I know how to anyways). I know you are TAD to NSI from your current command but mine will be pulling out for cruise and I don't want to have to change commands for a week or two. I just hope I can move them back before I go. Any advice on the matter?

I am not sure I completely understand the question... but... I do not think you go TAD from your current commands. NSI is just a TAD pit-stop en route to your ROTC unit.

Well I totally understand now. Anyways I am getting worried now because I am currently taking classes and they will not admit me or give me an acceptance letter because they need this semesters grades. I hope the NROTC unit can work their magic because it sounds like I will not see that letter until January and that is like way late.

In that case you need to talk to ED. I would also submit another degree plan and acceptance letter fro some other college that way you can get orders. Then when you do get that letter in January then you can send that in and get an ordmod.

Really quick question. Everyone with previous college credits...(Central Texas)...is applying to colleges as transfer students right?

I believe most schools require anywhere from 12-15 incoming credits IOT be considered a "transfer" student. I def applied transfer for all three schools....the application process is seriously less competitive and if your grades were B's or higher then it may make up for lacking high school performance. In fact, if you are a transfer then most schools don't even consider high school transcripts.

The rules of BOOST might change this year because the Mst Sgt marine who ran it before has since retired so someone else is taking over. I will make a phone call to a chief I know who works there and ask him if anything is different (i.e- it is now more strict, seabag inspections and such).

Were you able to contact the Chief and find anything out? I understand all this extra info is very nice to have but not necessary for survival. The questions we have that don't get answered on here will, without a doubt, be answered once we arrive in RI. With that being said I do have some questions hopefully someone can help me with. (I'm attending BOOST and NSI)

1. I plan on bringing all of my uniforms but what happens with them after RI? I'm guessing we can do anything we want (trash, give away) with them as long as it doesn't discredit the Navy. There is still a chance of being dropped and returned to Enlisted duty during college. Possible but not likely, I think. The degree plan should eliminate that problem but it might be best to keep them up to the day of commissioning just in case.

2. I'm eligible for the E-6 exam this cycle, first time. Before transferring to RI I need to sign my worksheet and ensure a test is reserved for me and sent to BOOST. With the exam dates being in March how does the testing work for the BOOST/NSI students who are eligible?

3. The living quarters for BOOST sound nice with plenty of room for personal space to study or do whatever. Now for NSI do you move to a different room/floor with a different room-ate? Are those rooms about the same?

4. I only have a couple pairs of the new PT uniform and wasn't sure how many or what kind was needed. With it being very cold throughout most of our training do we PT in a gym or do we put on a snowsuit and suck it up? Not sure how the flag conditions worked? Black, yellow, green?

Thanks in advance for the help and ideas. Also, please add anything that might have changed since the original post/posts on this thread.

As I only attended NSI I can answer questions about that.

I would recommend keeping your uniforms, just in case. I believe I read in the instruction that your CO can have you wear your enlisted uniforms if he chooses. (I forget exactly what it said but I do know that to be true). I have heard of some units actually making guys wear the old uniforms for special occasions, so once again I would keep them.

The guys who took the advancement exam were excused from other duties so they could take the exam. Don't worry about it, you will take it on time.

You will change rooms from BOOST to NSI. The rooms in NSI are small and do not have a computer or anything nice in them. Not much storage room either.

Don't worry about PT uniform. Bring what you have and the rest will be issued to you.

The Lord is good. I just found out my admissions appeal went through and I will be going to Univ. of Oklahoma. :D I am so happy. The only hiccup I have now is my f'n hearing test. Somehow I missed it by one thing. Whatever I am going there and will be there all day until I am within regs. Good Luck all.

Stupid question but here's to asking anyway...

Do all BOOST students go through the same classes or are classes specifically selected for you dependent on your weaknesses or lack of credits?

OK.. I will try and answer all the questions from the previous posts...

1) I contacted a Chief who works at OTCN, he didn't have any news on BOOST.. as far as he knew it was going away. So your guess is as good as mine on that one................

2) Keep all of your uniforms until the day you get commissioned. If the worst case scenario ever happened and you were dropped form STA-21, it would be a kick in the nuts to have to buy new enlisted uniforms on top of everything else. As far as BOOST goes, you will only need working blues and working/summer whites. And PT gear.. not sure about which set you need though.. we used the old style this year.

3) Your exam should be forwarded by your transferring command/ESO. You will take the E-4/5/6 exam at the O-club on base. No big deal, this applies for both NSI and BOOST.

4) As far as living conditions go.. BOOST isn't a bad setup. Some decent storage space, new furniture in all of the rooms and a computer (which may or may not work for crap) for each person. Computer has the internet too.. but a strict firewall which will get you dropped from the program if you try and sneak around it. When you transfer over to NSI.. it is essentially the same room setup, but you are very limited on what you can have because of room inspections and attention to detail yada yada. It is similar to boot camp style, but much more relaxed. So pack light for NSI, and if you go to BOOST bring a car so you can store your stuff while going through NSI. Also roomates are in alphabetical order at BOOST while NSI the LT liked to put people together so he could laugh at there names (example- OC Brown & OC Green, OC Burt & OC Ernst).

5) As far as PT goes.. during BOOST it was pretty much none existent. PT on your own, and the gyms on base are pretty sweet. I don't remember what the winter NSI folks did, but I think they PT'd inside. When the weather warms up you PT on the astro turf football field/track. I don't know if the new PT uniform comes with sweats or not? I still have the old stuff.

6) BOOST classes.. everyone goes through the same classes. there were like 60 of us and they split us up into 4 groups and we went to classes with our groups with 50 minutes periods and such. Pre-Calc, Physics, and English. Not amazingly hard stuff. BOOST is cake.. NSI is pretty easy too.

Hope this helps.

New Service Uniforms

Is anyone already wearing the new service uniforms, or reporting to BOOST in winter blues? I am stationed in Spain and we haven't recieved them yet, however, I have to buy a new set anyways and was looking to get the new ones (more comfortable than going to class all day with that damn necktie). If some people are wearing them, then it shouldn't matter if your previous command had them or not, right?
