A4s, You will love these............

EKA-3B Skywarrior from VAQ-130, A-4F Skyhawk from VA-22 and an F-8J Crusader from VF-53 piloted by CDR Dean Kaiser.

These two photos were taken on Oct. 2, 1969 during a sortie off the Bonnie Dick headed for North Vietnam. Photograph was taken by LT Joe Klugg of VFP-63 in an RF-8G Crusader.

Joe was my Uncle who was killed in Nov 1970 off the USS Oriskany. (mentioned on another thread)

WOW!! SAVE THE WHALE !!! Hook down, too ???? :)

Since you mentioned VQ-2 and ROTA (what a great place in the late '60's!), here is a couple of links -- most of you old VQ hands probably already know of them:

PORT LYAUTEY SQUADRON

US NAVAL AIR STATION, PORT LYAUTEY, KENITRA, MOROCCO

Thanks A4s, Great post and links. Rota was indeed a great place. Only visited a few times. Photos bring back a lot of memories, both good and bad. I lost a lot of good friends in EA-3 crashes, including the Skipper of VQ-1 in VA-3B PR-111 (Triple Sticks) in Jan 1985. I'll post the picture when I find it.

A listener sent me this Whale story and figured this would be a good thread to put it.

Not sure what the rules are on posting entire sea stories so here's a clip:

Our first pass was a touch and go, and even to this novice it felt especially rough. I remember hearing on UHF "906, Paddles, you lost your nose mount." To that the Skipper seemed to chuckle a bit as he replied "Yeah, it felt like we might have blown a tire." The comeback was "No, 906, your nose gear just went off the angle."
You can find the rest here:

it includes a link to newsreel video documenting the mishap.

Awesome video! +1 I have heard a lot of good sea stories from the A-3 bubbas over the years.

Not an EP-3 but a pretty bird. A Royal New Zealand Air Force P-3K. I've worked with these folks over the years, and they are quite impressive. A very small, dedicated and professional group.

That's where I got my WHALE stick-time ... w/ the VQ-1 WHALE det ... but only out of CUBI!!

Wasn't that really "yoke time" :D

My VT-86 winging was the last Whale and RF-4 class. After poking my head around inside a VAQ-34 one once I said a little prayer of thanks for Prowlers!

A quick VQ question: will there be an EP-8 or what are the plans for replacing the EP-3s?

Current plan is there will be a special mission P-8. That plan is of course subject to change.

Not quite. The EP-3 replacement aircraft (officially known for now as the EP-X) has not down-selected to a final contractor...hence no airframe yet.

Boeing will likely pitch their P-8 airframe in their bid...but 2 other KTRs (Northrup-Grumman and Lockheed) are also planning to bid on the program.

Only (relatively) sure thing is that whatever airframe is chosen, it won't be an Embraer RJ-145 again.

Of note, the Army is still planning on going forward with their Aerial Common Sensor idea...this time without the Navy...or the common sense to rename what was a failed program:D

Was Dale Hagen the skipper of VQ-1 or VQ-3 back then? He was the "father of the bride" at my wedding in 1980 since the real one couldn't make it from Indiana.

Anyone know if he ever got his star?

Good guy, although I almost killed him and the COMNAVMAR COS with a wicked slice off the tee that bounced around the cinder block shelter like a pinball.

Note I said special mission and maybe I should have specified but I won't here. The team I know is shuffling between Seattle, the PMO and another site doing the integration work with Boeing and has been for the last year.

A few more photos that I like...4 EP-3E photos and one I found from when VQ-2 was flying P4M-1Q Mercators out of Port Lyautey, Morocco.

As winter starts to get closer out here in the high desert, I find myself missing my time in Rota, Spain all the more.

Great pix ... what's that funny little thing nose on in pix #4 ... a Texan??

Loved Rota as well; very civilized -- except for these boys standing around the base w/ a Schmeisser slung over the shoulder -- mean lookin' SOB's, too -- one looked at us MIDN's ... grunted/nodded "HOLA" ... and turned away (thankfully -- probably disgusted w/ us :D) as we scurried off to the Exchange to buy our new Toledo steel Navy Sword.
