Teacher/Former Teachers Applying to OCS

Hi this is just my curiosity but how many teachers or former teachers are applying to OCS. I noticed there were quite a few Officers in history who have gotten Education degrees and taught for a short period then left the classroom and become quite successful Marine Corps Officers. Just curious is anyone else in the same boat of leaving the classroom for the Marine Corps?

One of my candio's at OCS was a music teacher. Great guy. He's down in Penscola with me now as an NFO. Selected P-8s, which was his first choice.

You write there are quite a few officers in history who have "Education Degrees..." Care to name a few? Education is not a major offered by any of the military academies and it is a rather new phenomenon in academia.

The rhetorical history. Anyways, what % of officers come from the academies?

I flew with someone recently who was a teacher before the military so it's not completely uncommon.

Why would it matter? No one cares what your job was prior to the service (within reason Internet wags).

But, it is not a rhetorical statement, it is quite clear. Now that I make my living as an historian I can safely say there are no well-known military leaders in history who had degrees in education, although there are a good number who were teachers before their respective wars began (Chamberlain and Jackson) and I am sure a tremendous number who later became teachers after their service. @Pags hit it head on, your degree doesn't really matter.

But...to answer your question (recognizing these numbers are approximate and change from year-to-year) commissioning sources for the Navy are:

Academies - 20%
ROTC w/Scholarship - 17%
ROTC no/Scholarship - 2%
OCS - 23%
Direct Commission - 24%
Other Sources - 14%

What exactly falls under 'direct commission' and 'other sources'? Which one includes LDO's and CWO's? If 'other sources' that makes sense to me but DCO seems way high though since 24% of the Navy ain't docs, nurses and JAGs.

Good question. I'll dig out the RAND report I pulled these from and see what it says. Off the top of my head, DCO mentioned primarily medical types, lawyers, ministers, and a small number of IT people.

That could also include or be reservist as their boards are DCO boards (Direct Commission Officer), other sources could be LDO and CWO

I remember seeing a stat somewhere specific about AD accessions and it was a pretty close to a 1/3 split for NROTC, USNA, and OCS.

That is a minority of a minority though and wouldn't bump the percentages up by much at all, I would hazard a guess that DCO's are in the low single digits for the whole force.

True, for that source to be 24% it would really need to include reservist, LDO/CWO, pretty much everything that isn't USNA/NROTC/OCS
